SHAW 1839-1908 Johnathan T. Shaw was born March 8, 1839 in Berlin Township, Mahoning County, Ohio, the third son of Joseph Shaw and Abigail Branin Shaw. Johnathan enlisted in the 104th regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company D, on the 15th of August 1862. He was 22 years old, five feet nine and one half inches tall, light hair and light complexion with blue eyes. Johnathan had been working as a farmer but owned no land of his own. As were many young men of this time, Johnathan was anxious for adventure and had been born with a particular wander lust which afflicted many of the Shaws. In April, 1863, Johnathan was taken ill with chronic diarrhea. He was hospitalized at Lexington, Kentucky and later sent to Cleveland. He spent two months in the hospital and was given an honorable discharge in February 1864 being unfit even for the invalid corps. Johnathan returned to Ohio. He married Rebecca Miller, February 4, 1866 at Marlboro, Ohio. Four sons were born to this union. In 1870, Johnathan and Rebecca moved to Iowa. Jonathan's younger brother James and wife, Leah, took a homestead in Nebraska circa 1878. In 1887, Johnathan took his family to Nebraska to homestead. The family could not make a go of this venture due to crop failures and Jonathan's ill health, remnants of his war illnesses. The family decided to return to Iowa. Rebecca and Johnathan made their home with their son Aaron David in O'Brien, County until Jonathan's death in 1908. His body was transported to Benton County by train where he was buried at Big Grove Cemetery, Benton County, Iowa
