Jolene Hrbek was called home to her Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 28, 2020. She passed away at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Creighton after suffering a heart attack at her home. Jolene Ann Kemnitz was born on January 6, 1946, at Lynch, Nebraska to Freddie and Viola (Kemnitz) Miller. She was their only child. Jolene grew up on a farm southwest of Verdel and attended school in Niobrara. She graduated from Niobrara High School in 1964. Jolene helped her parents on the Miller Family Farm, even after meeting the love of her life, Larry, on a blind date in 1964. Jolene was united in marriage to Larry Hrbek on September 30, 1965, at Bonesteel, South Dakota, and they made their home in Verdel, Nebraska. They had two sons: Doug was born on March 15, 1966, and Steve was born on February 17, 1967. Jolene and Larry worked on the farm but stayed at their home in Verdel until 1984, at which time they moved to the Miller Farm to take over its operation. They continued to farm until 1997, and then they moved to their home in Niobrara. During her lifetime, Jolene worked at many places and touched many lives. Her first job was at Cunningham’s Drug Store in Old Niobrara. Jolene worked for over 20 years at Farnik’s Grocery Store. There, she was a Jane-of-all-trades, and she specialized in ordering groceries and was known as the produce lady. Jolene also worked at both Ole’s and at the school in Niobrara as a cook. She loved to mow lawns and was a talented seamstress for much of her adult life as well. She made sure her boys’ and grandkids’ jeans were always patched up and ready to go. Jolene was an active member of the Niobrara Presbyterian Church. She often headed up committees to organize funeral meals, the annual Thanksgiving celebration, and the Tuesday Dinners for the community. She was a part of the local quilting club for many years, and several people close to Jolene may have a crocheted name that she made for them hanging in their home. Jolene collected Pillsbury Doughboy merchandise, and she loved to look at cookbooks and find new recipes to make for her family. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, crochet, and embroidery. Jolene also kept an eye out for great bargains on QVC. Above all else, Jolene was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was looking forward to nothing more than becoming a great-grandmother for the first time in December. She was a kind and loving soul who will be missed by all who were blessed to know her. Jolene was preceded in death by her parents and her grandparents. Her love will live on through those she left behind: her husband of 54 years, Larry; her sons, Doug and Steve; her daughter-in-law, Leah; her grandchildren, Tanner, Kendra, Beau, Courtney, Dillan and his girlfriend Kenzie, and Shane and his wife Sarah; and her great-grandbaby, Piglet.
