Read More	Jonathan Brackett was the son of Christopher Brackett who settled in Bennington, Vermont and then moved to Elbridge, New York where he died between 1810 and 1820. The year of Jonathan's birth was taken from the age at the time of death on the marker. The 1851 census gives his birth year as 1791/92 and the 1861 census gives his birth year as 1794/95. Jonathan married Mary Fancher the daughter of David and Elizabeth (Bellinger) Fancher or Fansher. According to the H. I. Brackett's Brackett Genealogy, published in 1907 in Washington, D.C., Jonathan moved to "Upper Canada in 1817". Descent: William, William, Richard, Peter, Richard, James, Nathan, John, Christopher Christopher Brackett was born perhaps in Boston. For a time prior to and probably during the War of the Revolution, he dwelt in Bennington, Vermont. After the war he moved to Manchester where he lived until about 1800. Christopher moved to Elbridge, New York and settled on a farm south of town where he died at the age of seventy-three years of age. During the War of the Revolution he served in Elijah Dewey's company. His name appears on the company roster as it was formed at the Battle of Bennington, 16 August 1777. He served on the opposite side in the war, as did his father. His father supported the English and served with the British Army. Sabra born 26 August 1785 in Manchester, Vermont. David born 12 May 1788 in Manchester, lived in Elbridge. Morris who drowned in the Osage River in Elbridge, New York, his date of birth is unknown. Birth records show that Elizabeth, Belinda, Sabra and David were the children of the second marriage. Jonathan birth year would also include him as a son of the second marriage. Jonathan named one of his sons Newman so he apparently was close to his brother, Newman. Jonathan Brackett married Mary Fansher. She was the daughter of David Fansher. The book, Lambton's Hundred Years 1849-1949 was written by Victor Lauriston and was published in 1949 by Haines Frontier Printing Company, Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. On page 58 you can read: "The first actual settler in Euphemia was David Fancher. He was of French extraction, his ancestors having settled in the Mohawk Valley of New York State in early colonial days. Fancher as a boy had been a teamster in the Revolutionary Army. When he came to Euphemia in March 1825, he had a large family of grown up sons and daughters. William Walker and Jonathan Brackett, two sons-in-law, located in Lot 17, Concession 3; while Fancher himself took up Lot 18, Concession 3." This appears to be Jonathan Brackett son of Christopher Brackett of Vermont and later New York State. Canada West was the designation for what is now part of the province of Ontario, Canada. This area was called Upper Canada from 1791 until 1841. It then became known as Canada West until 1867 when it became part of Ontario. There is also a Western district of this province, which is located just east of Detroit, Michigan. In this district there is a county named Lambton and within that county is a township named Euphemia. The 1861 census of the township of Euphemia in enumeration District No. 1,included: Jonathan Brackett, born in USA, 60, who was a farmer Mary Brackett, born in USA, 61 Newman Brackett, born in Ontario, 28 Sarah Brackett, born in Ontario, 20 John Brackett, born in Ontario, 16 Martin Brackett, born in Ontario, 24, who was a farmer Elizabeth Brackett, born in Ontario, 31 (wife of Martin) Alexander Brackett born in Ontario, 1 (son of Martin) This census record indicates they were living in a one story "log" house and that they could not read or write. Jonathan and his son Martin are listed as farmers. Genetic testing proves that this family descends from John Brockett of New Haven, Connecticut not Richard Brackett of Braintree, MA. Somewhere between New Haven, CT and Bennington, VT the name changed from Brockett to Brackett. H. I. Brackett's genealogy misleads one to Richard Brackett of Braintree.
