Page 257 under KAST === Obituary contributed by James Richard "Rich" Demory II (50508147): "Died, in Waterford, on Monday morning, 20th instant, after a slow illness, Captain Jonathan Cost, in the fifty second year of his age, leaving a beloved companion and eight children to lament their loss. The deceased was beloved and respected by all who knew him; he was endeared to a family whose welfare he promoted to the utmost of his abilities. He was remarkable for his attention and application to business, and it may truly be said of him, that he secured the necessaries of life by "the sweat of his brow." And whilst his family looked up to him for the staff of life, alas! Their fond hopes were blighted – like the grass of the field he was cut down, and now his body rests beneath the cold clods of the valley. As a citizen, he took an active part in all that tended to benefit the inhabitants of the place; as a friend he was sincere, and gave every demonstration of his friendship to all those who visited his house, and even to the last hour of his life; as a neighbor he was obliging and ready to reciprocate to his companion in life; and as a father he was attentive and faithful to his children, bestowing every regard that could be expected from a parent; but alas! He is gone, never more to return. His family will no more behold him or hear that cheering voice which echoed through the mansion, until the arrival of that great day for which all other days were made. Then shall he with all the congregated world appear in judgment. There shall his surviving friends and relations appear, all meet for the last interview. May we all be found ready having our lamps well trimmed and burning bright, when he that cometh, will come at an hour when we think not. And who has said, "What I say unto you, I say unto all, Watch." The solemnities of the occasion were of the most solemn character, and many shed the tear of sorrow and sympathy, whilst the Rev. M.L. Shuford addressed the audience with a very impressive discourse from the words- "Be ye also ready." His remains were followed to the place of interment by his surviving family, relations, and a large concourse of citizens." S.Y.T.
