Hanes, pioneer resident of Dallas County and prominent in the circles of the Grand Army of the Republic throughout the state, died Monday morning at Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he was spending the winter at the home of his son, George Hanes. According to information received here he suffered a heart attack last Wednesday and in his enfeebled condition, due to his extreme age, he was unable to rally. Mr. Hanes was past 94 years of age and much of that time was spent as a citizen of Dallas county. The body was shipped back to Iowa and arrived in Des Moines this morning accompanied by the son and other relatives and was taken to the Hamiltons Funeral Home. Mr. Hanes was widely known throughout the county, expecially in the southern part where the family was among the very first settlers. He served as deputy sheriff of the county for four years under Sheriff John Diddy, but most of his life was spent in farming until he retired and moved to Des Moines to make his home with his son, H. D. Hanes, 927 42nd street. He was born at Williamsburg, in Wayne county, Indiana, on Jan. 29, 1845 but when he was 10 years old he accompanied his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. David Hanes, to Dallas county where they located on an 80 acre farm which the elder Hanes purchased from the government for $1.25 per acre. W. E Brown now lives on the same 80 acres and it has never been in any other hands. The life of young Jonathan was similar to that of many other boys of that time with plenty of hardwork which gave him a strong, healthy body and which instilled in him a love of home and country which remained with him all his life. His first job as a boy was that of dropping corn behind a plow and for which he was paid 25 cents a day. Later he was "hired out" by his father to a Maine farmer for $11 a month. His task was to drive an ox team hitched to a prairie breaker and when fifteen years old he made a hand in the harvest fields binding grain behind an old McCormick reaper. In the winter of 1852-53 he drove hogs to Iowa City, Grinnell and Marshalltown, then the terminals of the railroads. On January 4, 1864, he enlisted in the U. S. army and his first duties were in guarding the Indiana captured after the Spirit Lake Massacre, who had been sent to Davenport. In February of the same year, in company with other members of the 23rd Iowa infantry he was sent south and landed in New Orleans the following month. He served in the campaign around Mada Guarda Island in Texans and was there most of the time uuntil he was mustered out at the close of the war in August, 1865. Following the war he returned to Boone township and was married to Mary Cassatt on September 26th, 1878, engaging in farming until his appointment as deputy sheriff in 1892, when he moved to Adel. Later he was in the meat market business here with William Myers. In 1890 he moved to Colorado Springs, where he spent two years but returned to Dallas county and lived in Boone township and in Waukee until 1920, since which time his home has been in Des Moines. At the latter place, and in Dallas county as well, he took a active part in G. A. R. affairs and served as commander of Crocker Post. He also served on the staff of the national commander and was signally honored a few years ago when he was chosen as head of the Iowa department of the G.A.R
