Jonathan F. Cox died yesterday morning at 11 o’clock at the home on the Cussick tract, near this city, at the age of 74 years. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Baptist Church in this city, Rev. C.E. Winning officiating in the absence of Rev. W.E. Story. The G.A.R., of which the deceased was an honored member, will have charge of the services. Jonathan Cox was born in Indiana, April 21, 1837. He went with his father to Iowa in 1848 and resided in the counties of Hardin and Marshall for a number of years. He married Miss Matilda Bond on December 12, 1857, and at the outbreak of the civil war enlisted with Company B, Eleventh Iowa Infantry, and served with credit to himself and country throughout the war. Returning from the front he rejoined his family and together they came to California, settling in Pasadena in 1886. There they remained on year, and then returned to Iowa. Fourteen years ago, Mr. Cox returned to this state and settled on the land where he died. The deceased was the father of seven children, one of whom, the eldest, is dead. His first wife preceded him to the grave by six years. The following children survive: Mrs. Laura Jones of Radcliffe, Iowa; William A. Cox, J.A. Cox, E.H. Cox and Mrs. Eva Shaw, all of Chico. The deceased was twice married, the second wife being Mrs. Nancy Jane Smith, who survives. Jonathan Cox was a life-long Christian, having been converted when a youth. Prior to coming to Chico he was a member of the M.E. Church, but several years ago he became a member of the local Baptist congregation. A large circle of true and loving friends are left to mourn the death of a highly respected citizen. ~~~ 73-year-old Jonathan Franklin Cox was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on February 23, 1911. ~~~ Chico Record, Saturday, February 24, 1911, pg 4 col 3: Pioneer Buried.
