Layton was -elected chairman and Mr. Brooks sec- -retary. The following were then selected as delegates to the Grand Island state convention: James Brooks, --Herman Dt-aubf. I. R. Layton and P. Wyoming Post Herald January 24, 1906 Jonathan Nicholas From the Stanton (Neb) Picket of Jan 18th,we take the following in relation to the death of Jonathan Nicholas, a former resident of Stark County: "Jonathan Nicholas died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Brooks, six miles northeast of Stanton, at eight o'clock Sunday morning, January 14. He was not sick for any length of time and died from Heart failure while sitting on a chair. "For some time he had been afflicted with rheumatism and sometime ago went to Hot Springs, South Dakota, for treatment and last Friday returned feeling much improved and quite spry. He went out to his daughter's Saturday evening, feeling quite cheerful and none dreamed that the end was so near, although he had a severe cold at the time. Jonathan Nicholas was born May 3, 1830, in Vinton County, Ohio and moved to Peoria County, Illinois in 1851. One year later he moved to Stark County. He was married to Emily Humphrey, December 27, 1855, to which union two sons and two daughters were born, all of whom survive him. His wife died in Stark County, Illinois, July 6, 1865. He moved to Antelope County, Nebraska in the spring of 1883; thence in the fall of the same year to Stanton county, where he has since resided. He died at 8 a.m. Sunday, January 4th aged 75 years, 8 months and 11 days. Deceased was one of the wealthy men of the county, was scrupulously honest and honorable and highly respected by all who knew him. Deceased was for many years a resident of this county and will be remembered by many of our older citizens.
