Jonathan Read, a resident of the county since 1854, died at his home, three miles southwest of Gilman on Tuesday at 7 o'clock in the evening. His death was due to pneumonia, with which he was taken sick Thursday morning of last week. He was past 80 years of age. Mr. Read was born in Camden county, New Jersey on April 3, 1827. His early years were spent in Montgomery county, Ohio. On April 16, 1848, he married Miss Marie Christopher, who died on September 18, 1907. Mr. and Mrs. Read came to Iowa in 1854, and the former entered on 160 acres of land on which he lived to the time of his death. Mr. Read was respected and loved by all who knew him, and his life was identified with the development of the county. He was the father of ten children, those surviving beings Mrs. H.C. Sieg of this city; Mrs. W.A. Walkup and Charles E. Read, of Gilman; George W. Read of Howard, Nebraska; and Mrs. Noyce Elliot of Le Grand. All of the children were with their father when he died. In addition he is survived by 32 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. Read was a member of Cyrus Lodge, A.F. and A.M. The funeral was held at 10:30 o'clock this morning, the ceremony at the grave being in charge of the Masonic lodge. Added 17 July 2022
