[volume], September 21, 1907, Image 7 Mrs. Jonathan Read, one of the pioneers of Marshall county, and a resident of Greencastle Township for 43 years, died on Thursday at her home, three miles southwest of Gilman. Mrs. Read was 79 years of age, and was the mother of Mrs. H.C. Sieg and Mrs. Emma Elliott, of this city. Maria Christopher, daughter of Cornelius and Marie Christopher, was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, on July 28, 1828, where she was married to Jonathan Read on April 16, 1848. In 1854, Mr. and Mrs. Read came to this county, and under the homestead laws of the United States, carved out a home out of the virgin prairie which they have since occupied, and upon which they have reared a large family to useful manhood and womanhood. In their 53 years of happy wedded life upon these prairies they have seen many changes which come to the lot of all. Ten children have been born to them, five of whom survive in the persons of Mesdames Rebecca Jane Sieg and Emma Elliott, of Marshalltown, and Harriett Walkup, of Gilman; and Messrs. George W. Read of Greencastle Township. In the early days Mrs. Read and her husband united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Ferguson, which they for a long time attended regularly, but increasing cares and failing health in later years confined Mrs. Read to her home, where her beautiful Christian spirit and patience in suffering were an inspiration to all who knew her. The funeral was held Friday afternoon at the residence, conducted by Rev. George R. Chambers, of Grinnell. The music was by a quartet composed of Mesdames L.W. Seager and J.M. Carney, and Messrs. J.S. Darrah and J.M. Carney. Interment was in Prairie View Cemetery. All the children were present at the funeral, as was also Warren Christopher, a brother of Mrs. Read, of Jersey county, Illinois.
