Joe was born on April 5, 1926 on the family farm south of Kranzburg, South Dakota to Nicholas and Agnes (Staudacher) Spartz. He attended Holy Rosary Catholic School in Kranzburg. Joe took up farming with his father and worked the winter months at Swift's Packing Plant in Watertown, South Dakota. He sold Archer oil for many years; making many friendships along the way. On June 22, 1948, Joe married Jeanette Endres in Watertown, South Dakota. They farmed south of Kranzburg until his retirement. Joe and Jeanette spent 58 years together in Kranzburg; where they raised their family. Joe served as supervisor on the Kranzburg township board and the Codington County A.S.C.S. board. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Elks Lodge. Joe enjoyed playing cards, board games, and completing jigsaw puzzles. Family parties with grandchildren were a top priority. He spent a lot of his time mowing lawns, refinishing furniture and helping his son on the farm. Joe is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Kranzburg, South Dakota; three children, Julianne Kass, of Poulsbo, Washington., JoAnn and her husband, Ken Comes, of Waverly, South Dakota; Leon and his wife, Angel Spartz, of Kranzburg, South Dakota; two brothers, Vern and his wife, Wilma Spartz, of Huron, South Dakota and Greg and his wife, Wilma Spartz, of Blue Springs, Missouri; two sisters, Bernice Mack of Kranzburg, South Dakota and Sister Muriel (Rita Mae) Spartz of Humboldt, South Dakota; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren . He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Loretta Zaug, and one son-in-law, Terry Kass. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Chapel, Watertown, South Dakota.
