Vernon Mathias Spartz, son of Nicholas and Agnes (Staudacher) Spartz, was born on March 7, 1920, in Ashton, IA. At the age of 2 he moved with his family to Kranzburg, SD. Vern attended school at Holy Rosary Catholic School in Kranzburg for 10 years and then the Agriculture School in Brookings, SD, for 2 years. In 1942 he moved to San Diego, CA, where he worked for 2 years at Consolidated Aircraft Corp. On January 15, 1944, Vern was appointed 2nd Lt. in the U. S. Army Air Corps. During World War II he performed the duties of navigator aboard the B-17G bomber "True Love" in the 388th Bomber Group, flying 35 missions out of northern England in the European Theater and participating with the invasion forces on Normandy, France. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross among other service medals. Following his honorable discharge as a 1st Lt. he returned to South Dakota in 1945. As a young man Vern loved agriculture and the land. He started working for International Harvester Company in 1946 and in 1962 he became co-owner of Lake County International in Madison, SD, until his retirement in 1985. While living in Madison Vern served as a county commissioner for Lake County; 5 years on the South Dakota Department of Agriculture board of directors headquartered in Pierre; the South Dakota State Conservation board of directors; Madison Community Hospital board of directors; St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church parish council and school board; a member of the VFW Ronald Westby Post #2638 of Madison; American Legion McKibbin-Moser Post #15 of Madison; Rotary Club for 25 years; and Knights of Columbus for 50 years. His many interests included golfing, hunting, traveling, bowling, snow-mobiling, and playing cards. On January 22, 1944, Vern married Mildred "Midge" Fox in Watertown. They had one daughter and three sons. He deeply enjoyed his many years being a father and Midge's husband. After 47 years of marriage Midge died July 11, 1991. On May 20, 1995, Vern married his second love, Wilma Cronin, and moved to her farm south of Huron. They have enjoyed their 18 years with each other. He is survived by his wife, Wilma; 4 children, James (Donna) Spartz of Anchorage, AK, Elaine Stewart of Starke, FL; Dean (Mona) Spartz of Sioux City, IA, and Dale (Donna) Spartz of Hastings, NE; 3 step-sons, Bob (Diana) Cronin of La Crescent, MN, Craig (Jan) Cronin of Huron, and Pat (Janey) Cronin of Huron; 13 grandchildren, Stephanie (Chuck), Sarah, Nick, Eric, Chris, Aaron (Sarah) Angie, Jeff, Emily, Elizabeth, Matthew, Kimberly, and Alyssa; 5 great grandchildren, Erin, Gavin, Troy, Jensen and Caleb; 12 step grandchildren and 16 step-great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Bernice (Leo) Mack of Sioux Falls, and Sr. Muriel Spartz of Watertown; brother, Greg (Wilma) Spartz of Blue Springs, MO and sister-in-law Jeanette Spartz of Kranzburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; 3 infant siblings, Joseph G., Benedict, and Mary; sister, Loretta (Elmer) Zaug, brother Joseph A.
