Joseph Ashton Leonard was the son of Abiram Longwell Leonard and Sarah Ashton, born in Clear Creek Township, Jasper County, Iowa, on 14 November 1862. He was the first of four sons (Joseph Ashton, Charles Avery, Harvy and Asa Walter) born to this union. His other sibling was, Sarah Jane Leonard. She was the daughter of Abiram Longwell Leonard and Sarah Jane Connor. Sarah Jane Connor Leonard died on their journey from Ohio to Iowa in 1857 just two weeks after giving birth of Sarah Jane. A memorial for her is located in Ashton Cemetery, Jasper County, Iowa. On 14 November 1880 Joseph married Grace “Gracie” Enola Cooper in Jasper County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Cooper and Mary Ann Weiser, born August 1855 in Ogle County, Illinois. To this union were born two daughters; Carolyn “Carrie” Oral Leonard Miller (1883-1918) and Mary Leora Leonard (1887-1975). Tragedy struck the family with the death of Gracie on 16 November 1908 and again with the death of Carrie on 6 June 1918. Sometime after 1920 Joseph decided to move to California to live with his brother, Asa Walter. The U.S. Federal Census verifies that is where he was living in 1930. He left his capable, and well established, daughter, Mary Leora, with the property in Jasper County where she wrote articles for a farmer’s magazine. Joseph passed away in Sacramento, California on 20 January 1937 and was buried at Sylvan Cemetery, Citrus Heights, Sacramento County, California. He is in the Leonard family plot alongside his brother, Asa Walter Leonard and his wife Minerva Gertrude Angelo Leonard.
