Description	:	Joseph B. Smith died in a house fire in 1942 in Muscotah, KS. The fire occured between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m.. Kilby Brun, Joseph's son-in-law, was lighting an oil stove on the first floor of his 2-story frame home. His wife, Jennie (Smith) Brun was with him. Upstairs, their daughter, Dorothea (Dorothy) Lee Brun was sleeping. In a downstairs room slept Joseph Smith, Jennie's father. Smith died in a house fire in 1942 in Muscotah, KS. The fire occured between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m.. Upstairs, their daughter, Dorothea (Dorothy) Lee Brun was sleeping. In a downstairs room slept Joseph Smith, Jennie's father. The oil stove exploded, and flaming drops of oil shot through out the house. Mr. Brun's clothing was ignited and he fled from the home. Mrs. Jennie Brun ran and got her daughter, brought her part way down the stairs, then broke a half-window out with her bare hands and threw her 7 year old daughter through it to land safely to the ground. Mrs. Brun then awoke her elderly father, Joseph B. Smith, who was quite deaf, and tried to lift him through the window. She was not strong enough, so she jumped through the window herself, intending to rescue him by tearing off the storm door of the house. Clouds of dense smoke filled the house and the fire spread rapidly. When Mrs. Brun regained entrance to the house, her father had left the stairway, and she was unable to find him. Ambulances from Effingham and Atchison, KS rushed Mr. and Mrs. Brun to the Atchison Hospital. Mr. Kilby Brun died of severe burns, and Mrs. Brun survived with burns about her head and hands. Joseph died of smoke inhalation and severe burns. (Taken from Kansas newspaper article in 1942.) I do not know who his father and mother were. He had 3 children by his wife, Myrtle Aliza Parrott. His children were Ethel Marie Smith (Lormer), Jennie Josephine Smith (Brun) and Lillian (Lillie) Mae (Smith) Rivers-Young.
