He was listed on the 1859 voter census in Burlington Township of Coffey County. Joseph's son George is named as a member of the Hampden Colony that settled in Coffey County, Kansas in 1855. Most likely, the entire family came at the same time. The 1860 Burlington Township, Coffey County, Kansas Territory census lists J. B. & Mary Wetherbee with George, age 27, born in MA; Albert, 10 IN; and Malissa J. Seers, 8. J. B. Wetherbee, 52; Mary, 48; & Albert, 17 were listed together on the 1865 Burlington, Coffey, Kansas State report. The 1870 census shows Joseph & Mary together, with no children. This is the last report where Mary has been found. The 1875 state census, in the same location, records J. B. Wetherbee, 62 with George E., 36. Mary E., age 12, born in Kansas; Samuel, 10 KS; & Oscar B., 3 KS, are also listed. Joseph B. & George E. and the children are shown next to Albert & Sarah Wetherbee and their children, Joseph, 4; William, 2; & an infant daughter. The 1875 state census is the last report where Joseph B. Wetherbee has been found. Joseph B. Wetherbee is recorded in a veteran's burial survey of Coffey County, Kansas that was published by Mrs. C. J. Garrett and assistants in 1962. He is listed in Mount Hope Cemetery and his death date is listed. His age-at-death is listed as 65 years, 1 month, & 25 days. An S. S. "Weatherby" is also listed with no additional data. George was still living in Coffey County in 1880. The 1878 Coffey County atlas shows that J. B. Wetherbee lived about a mile or so south of Burlington. He owned land on the west side of the Neosho River. His residence would have been fairly close to this cemetery. This information is from Massachusetts Vital records, a burial record, and census reports. Joseph B. Wetherbee would have been older than the average Civil War soldier. It is possible that he served during the Mexican War or in a Kansas militia regiment. Military records have not yet been found for him. Joseph B. & Mary Wetherbee are also listed as the parents of Joseph Henry Wetherbee, born March 5, 1842, who has not been found in Kansas census reports. ---------------------------- S. S.
