Description	:	Comrade Joseph Babb was born near St Clairsville, Ohio. He moved with his parents to Hennepin, Illinois in 1838. Crossed the plains to California in 1850 and returned to Illinois in 1853. He married Nancy Jane Marple on June 16, 1853 and moved to Henry County, Illinois in 1861. He moved to Dakota County, Minnesota in 1856 and was in the Indian wars as an Independent squad of Acting Scouts. Read More	Comrade Joseph Babb was born near St Clairsville, Ohio. He moved with his parents to Hennepin, Illinois in 1838. Crossed the plains to California in 1850 and returned to Illinois in 1853. He married Nancy Jane Marple on June 16, 1853 and moved to Henry County, Illinois in 1861. He moved to Dakota County, Minnesota in 1856 and was in the Indian wars as an Independent squad of Acting Scouts. In 1864 he left his wife and three children to volunteer in Co A 4th Minnesota Infantry and joined the regiment in Georgia. He was in General Sherman's campaign and in the battle of Altoona when Sherman sent his signal to General Corse to "hold the fort for we are coming". There were 1944 men engaged and 1050 of that number were killed or wounded. They succeeded in saving the fort but at a fearful loss of life. He was in the Atlanta Campaign and on the march to the sea, was in a number of skirmishes in and about Savannah, Georgia. From Savannah to Beaufort, SC, then to Columbia, SC, to Bentonville, NC, to Raleigh, NC, to Petersburg, Virginia, to Richmand, Virginia on to Washington DC and was in the "Grand Review of the Armies" on May 23-24, 1865. From Washington he went to Louisville, Kentucky and was mustered out of the service on account of the close of the war. After the war he joined his family and 1865 moved back to Illinois. In 1869 he came to Poweshiek County, Iowa where he has resided since. Comrade Babb joined Wisner Post by muster March 30, 1884 and has been an honored member until his death. OBITUARY Joseph Babb was the son of Jacob and Nancy Ann Rogers Babb. He was married to Nancy Jane Marple on June 16, 1853 in Bureau County, Illinois and later moved to Henry County, Illinois where they resided for a short time before moving to MN. After the war he joined his family in Minnesota before moving back to Illinois in 1865. In 1869 the family moved to Poweshiek County, Iowa and located on a farm southeast of Montezuma, Iowa. He followed the peaceful pursuit of farming until 1891 when he moved to Montezuma. He was converted during a series of meetings held in the Cunningham school house 1876 and later joined the Beulah Church near his home. He and his wife united with the ME Church of Montezuma and retained this membership until his death. He leaves a wife and six children; Milford F, Mary J, George W, Harry E, Della M and Cynthia E. Two sons, Willis L and Frederick E preceded his departure.
