Dec. 29, 1949 Pg. 8 Funeral services were held Friday for Joseph B. Cory, who died the previous Tuesday at his home in Minden after an extended illness. Private services were held at the Layton Funeral Home at 11 a.m., and public services were at 2:30 in the afternoon at the same place, the Rev. Chas. M. Wilson of the United Presbyterian church officiating at both. Interment was in the Minden cemetery. Joseph Bailey Cory, the son of J. F. and Ann Harrison Cory, was born in Millwood, Ohio, April 30, 1868, and passed away at his home in Minden December 20, 1949, at the age of 81 years, seven months and 20 days. At an early age he moved with his parents to near Muscatine, Iowa. After two years the family moved to Nebraska, locating in Franklin county near Campbell. There he resided until 1887 when he came to Minden. Mr. Cory was married in January, 1894, to Etta Darnell. To this union two children were born, one daughter, Lela, now Mrs. George N. Youngson, Jr., of Evanston, Ill., and one son, J. Paul, of Fort Collins, Colo. Mrs. Cory passed away in 1913. August 18, 1915, Mr. Cory was united in marriage to Miss Reye Irwin of Minden. They were privileged to spend 34 happy years together. During the past few years Mrs. Cory has been in poor health and Mr. Cory was most thoughtful and faithful in caring for her and providing her with every comfort he knew how to secure. Mr. Cory was one of the pioneers of this part of Nebraska. He often spoke of the sod house of his boyhood home, and of the ways of pioneer life in Nebraska. For the past 62 years he was active in the business life of this community. From 1887 to 1905 he operated a barber shop in Minden. From 1905 until his health failed he was engaged for the most part in the real estate business. For years he had a large acquaintance through the whole community. Left to mourn his passing besides his wife and children are two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Fish of Campbell and Mrs. Mary Anderson of Fremont, and a host of other relatives and friends. Mr. Cory accepted Christ as his Saviour, was baptized and admitted into the membership of the Minden United Presbyterian church May 2, 1948.
