Joseph Bentler, 73, well known Lee county farmer, was born on a farm near Houghton May 21, 1873, and had spent his entire life on the same farm. He was a member of St. John's parish, the Men's Society, and a Charter member of the West Point Council, Knights of Columbus. On April 22, 1909, he was united in marriage to Diena Holtkamp in St. Joseph's church at Fort Madison. She preceded her husband in death in 1937. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Steve Pranger and Mrs. Adrian Fullenkamp, West Point; Mrs. Paul Sanders, Mrs. Linus Menke, Gertrude, Rita and Dorothy Bentler, Houghton; Louis, Francis, and Anthony Bentler, Houghton, and Leo Bentler of St. Paul, Iowa. Also surviving are one brother and three sisters; Frank, of Pilot Grove; Mrs. Gerhard Esmeier, West Point; Mrs. George Hellman, Pilot Grove, and Mrs. Peter Mertens. Pallbearers were: Wm. Bentler, Burlington, Wm. Bentler, Houghton, Wm. Hellman, Adrian Mertens, Virgil Meierotto, and Lawrence Kruse.
