B. W. Spargur The funeral of J. B. W. Spargur was held at the residence on North High Street last Thursday morning. Services were conducted by Rev. W. B. Dunham. The following memoir of his life and works, prepared by a friend and business associate, was read by Rev. Dunham: Joseph Brooks W. Spargur, was born at Rainsboro, Highland County, Ohio, July 21st, a8rt. He died at his residence in Hillsboro, Ohio, on April 6th, 1908. He was married to Lena Penn, October 31, 1877, who survives him. This union resulted in a very happy married life, each being devoted to the other to the end. From his early manhood Mr. Spargur was actively and successfully engaged in business. In 1873, he organized at Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio, the bank of Spargur Hulitt & Co., and became its president. Under his management the bank was highly successful. At the same time he organized and carried on a large lumber business in southern Ohio and eastern Kentucky. This was very profitable, but its cares together with those of his banking business proved too great upon his health and he was compelled, for a time, to retire from active affairs. It is thought by his friends that he never entirely recovered his former health. In 1887, Mr. Spargur arranged his business matters in Bainbridge so that they could be continued without his active management and removed to Hillsboro, where he continued to reside until his death. Mr. Spargur's health having improved, in January 1894, he organized the Farmers & Traders Bank of Hillsboro, and became its president. He was very active in its management until about two years ago when his again declining health forced him to take less interest in business matters. Mr. Spargur was one of the best known business men in Ross and Highland Counties. He was uniformly successful in his business undertakings. In private life Mr. Spargur was always cheerful in manner, although to be so, he had for many years to content with the despondency caused by ill health. Mr. Spargur never criticized conduct harshly if he could avoid it. If he could speak kindly of others he did so. If he could not, he either said nothing, or was careful to make his criticism just and fair. Quietly and without its being known save by those who received or administered his bounty, he was charitable and kind, taking pleasure in relieving misfortune and distress.
