Read More	Joseph, son of Matthew Spence and Margaret Hanson Burns, was born March 11, 1859, at Fahold, New Jersey. He departed this life August 31, 1946, at the home of Mrs. Fred Maxfield in Fairmont, being 88 years, 5 months and 20 days of age. He came to Nebraska in the 70's and settled first at Plattsmouth, later coming on to Fairmont which has been his home ever since. A shoemaker by trade, he plied his trade, making shoes for the people of Fairmont and surrounding territory. As he plied his trade, his shop often became the scene of political arguments and intrigues. He was a familiar figure in the shop and on the street until ill health forced him to the wheelchair and later to his bed. He lived alone after the passing of his wife, for eight years and since June 19, 1939, made his home with Mr. and Mrs.Fred Maxfield. Mr. Maxfield's death occurred July 6, 1946. On November 21, 1907, he united in marriage with Mrs. Cynthia Parrish Maxfield, who preceded him March 14, 1931. Joe united with the Congregational Church at Plattsville, Conn., and on March 7, 1886, transferred his membership to the First Congregational Church in Fairmont. He was initiated into Fairmont Lodge No. 48, A.F. & A.M., December 7, 1886; passed Jan. 18, 1887 and raised March 1, 1887. He wore a fifty-year button and the Bronze Jorden Medal as the oldest member of the Fairmont Lodge No. 48 A.F. & A.M. He was master of the lodge from July, 1894, until July, 1897. He is survived by a step-grandson, Glen Cecil Maxfield of Kankakee, Ill.; a brother, Frederick, living in Conn.; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, as well as many friends. Funeral services were held at three o'clock Monday afternoon, September 2, in the Kritner Funeral Home Chapel in Fairmont, Rev. L.A. Fishell officiating. The singers were Mrs. W.R. Dorrance and Mrs. Rufus Dado, with Miss Lorena Fishel as pianist. The chapel was filled to capacity and the floral offerings many and beautiful. Members of the Masonic order were seated enmasse. Interment was made in the Fairmont cemetery, pallbearers being George White, George Schepers, Willard Goodrich, Alex Shanklin, William K. Brown and Valti Capes. {The passing of Joseph Burns constitutes the early end of a good citizen, whose industry and integrity will long be remembered by a wide circle of friends. Joe was our friend for more than sixty years--and always "on the square." He suffered ill health, over a long period, with remarkable fortitude.
