Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Orr, both pioneers of this community, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary yesterday, February 13, at their home in Hazel Green township. The event was made the occasion for a happy gathering of family and friends to the number of seventy-five and the day marks a milestone in outstanding events. On February 13, 1879, Mary Matilda Corll and Joseph Cameron Orr were married at Hadley, PA. On February 13, 1929, they celebrated their golden wedding in the presence of seventy-five guests and one brother, Charles Corll, who was a witness of both services. A sister, Mrs. James Thompson, was the lodestone that drew the bride from Pennsylvania to meet her bridegroom here in Iowa. They spent their honeymoon days in the timber northwest of the Alexander Johnson place and commenced to live on a farm in the southern part of Union township, which was their home until 1898, when they bought the Hiram Arnold place and in Hazel Green township, which has continued to be their home ever since with the exception of one year spent in Hopkinton. Four children; Edward, Everett and Charles, with their wives and twelve children were present at the anniversary, while their daughter, Mrs. Andrew Wilson, with her husband and two children of Mediapolis, Iowa, were prevented by illness from adding to the joy of the occasion. One foster son, Raymond Garner, very ably assisted in putting the guests at ease. After a bountiful dinner, Revds. E. E. Moore of the Golden Prairie Congregational Church and F. W. Allen of the Hopkinton Reformed Covenanter Church enlivened the celebration with pleasing and fitting remarks. Then Mr. Corll told of the day fifty years ago. Their children remembered their parents with gold rings and the guests presented money. The day was clear, cold and beautiful and the guests were transferred to bobsleds to finish their journey when automobiles were abandoned at the end of the gravel road. Don Corll and Mrs. Emily Corll Hughes, a brother's children, and James, Charles, and Clyde Thompson, a sister's children, represented Mrs. Orr's family, while Mrs. Luella Guthrie and Anna Chrystal represented Mr. Orr's family. (Delaware Co., IA) While ill health had affected Mr. Orr for several months past the members of the family were hopeful that many more years would be allotted to him. A second stroke of paralysis, however, with an attack of pneumonia, foretold the end which came to him last evening. Mr. and Mrs. Orr celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding on February 13, 1929, at which time members of the family and many friends joined in extending to them sincere congratulations. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:45 from teh home and 2:30 at the Golden Church, Rev. F. E. Allen, Pastor of the Hopkinton Reformed Presbyterian Church, officiating. Ref: J. C. Mr. Orr had been a resident of Delaware Co., since his childhood days, and for many years a resident of Hazel Green Township. Joseph Cameron Orr was born May 25, 1848, at Zanesville, Ohio, and died 14 January 1931, at his home in Hazel Green Township. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1856, when they as pioneers moved into this part of the state. His home has been in Delaware County since childhood. He was married on February 13, 1879, at Hadley, PA to Mary Matilda Corll. To this union were born Edmund C., and Everett I. of Coggon; Matilda R., now Mrs. Andrew Wilson of Mediapolis, Iowa and Charles J. of Manchester. There are fifteen grandchildren still living. It is a matter of deep gratitude that the members of the family have been spared until this time. Mr. Orr united with the Reformed Presbyterian Church and remained a member through his life. It was almost two years ago that Mr. and Mrs. Orr celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. The large number of relatives and friends who gathered to help them enjoy that occasion indicated the high respect in which Mr. Orr was held in the community. He was a devoted Father, a kind neighbor, a successful farmer and an interested member of the Church. His last illness was short, of but three days duration, but during the weeks, when he was weak and often suffering, he longed for the Lord to take him home.
