The Reverend Rod Dunker officiated, with burial in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Military graveside honors were conducted by McNamara-Moore Post No. 61 of the American Legion Born October 5, 1915, in Gary, Indiana, Joseph Clarence Hamilton was the son of Harold H. and Hazel (Boyington) Hamilton. He went to school and graduated from Hobart High School. Joe farmed and worked in the Gary Steel Mills. He then had forty years of service with the Santa Fe Railroad, thirty of which were as an engineer. He loved the railroad and was very proud of being an engineer. In retirement, Joe loved making clocks and tables as well as writing letters to the editor. He married Helma (Mildenstein) Ernst on April 11, 1966, at Barstow, California. The couple moved to Ida Grove in 1984. Survivors include his wife, Helma; a son, James Hamilton of Hobart, IN; three daughters, Joyce (Harold) Fifield of Sebring, FL, Kathleen (Jerome) Runnion of Knoxville, TN, and Ruth (James) Mathews of Oologah, OK; a step-daughter, Karen (Dwayne) Salmon of Ida Grove; two step-sons, Wayne Ernst of Port Saint Joe, FL., and Kenneth Ernst of Modesto, CA; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Flanigan and Jeanette Sicterman, both of Hobert, IN; a brother, Gordon Hamilton of Chesterton, IN; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
