Mr. Davis has been a resident of this township for over fifteen years. (Carroll Sentinel, Carroll, IA, February 10, 1892) Joseph Davis died at his home three miles northwest of Coon Rapids on February 6, 1892, of consumption. He was born in Nobles county, Ohio, in 1836 [per cemetery records, 1838] Twenty years later, in 1856, he moved to Iowa. He served in company C, 20th Iowa infantry, during the war of the rebellion. In 1867 [September 12, 1867 at Clinton co., IA] he was married to Miss Celia Hewlitt [Hulet?] of Clinton county, Iowa. In 1886 his wife died of the same dread disease, consumption, in this county. Seven children are left to mourn the loss of father, the youngest being in her eighth year. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the family residence, Rev. Rawls conducting the services. It was largely attended showing in a marked degree the high esteem in which he was held by his fellow citizens. Mr. Davis was a hard-working, honest and upright man and consequently had many warm friends who extend their heartfelt sympathy to those left to mourn his loss.
