Description	:	Joe Mathieu, Sr., one of the most prominent pioneers of the Stratford country, passed away at the family home six miles southeast of that city yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock, following an attack of heart trouble. He is survived by two sons, Joe E. Mathieu, Jr., and Ben Mathieu, both of the Stratford territory, one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Rock of Groton, and three sisters who are; Mrs. Lizzie McKenzie of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Mary Snowden and Mrs. Lottie Dyer of Ellensburg, Wash., and seven brothers, Charles of Hemming, Wis. (Henning, MN), Ed of Stratford, Milt of Aberdeen, Frank and Theodore of Chippewa Falls, Wis., James of Fort Frances, Ont., Canada, and Henry Oling of Saskatchewan, Canada. His wife, two daughters (Irene & ?) and a son (Floyd) preceded him in death. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Stratford and also the M.W.A. Lodge No. 545 of that city. He had been prominent in all civic and church affairs and was one of the most widely known and best liked citizens in the northern half of South Dakota. Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the home near Stratford. The services will be in direct charge of the Stratford Odd Fellows. Mathieu died at his home southeast of Stratford Thursday afternoon. He has been in poor health for two or three years and quite low for a time. Mr. Mathieu was one of the pioneers of this community, settling here in 1881. He was a man who worked for the good of his community and who was loved and respected by all. His wife and three children preceded him in death. He leaves three children to mourn his death; J. E. Mathieu of Stratford; Mrs. Wm.
