Davidson farm just west of Glasco exploded and fatally injured Joe Monroe, son-in-law of Mr. Davidson, and injuring two others more or less seriously, Bryan Davidson receiving a great number of cuts about the face and chest. Bert Fleming, engineer, was bruised considerably when a flying piece of metal struck him in the side. Dave Funk, though covered with water from the engine, received but a small cut in the neck. Wid Davidson, Ed Collins and Leland Davidson, the others who were working about the saw miraculously escaped injury. Mr. Monroe was in direct line with the engine and was so frightfully injured that he was immediately rushed to the hospital at Concordia where he passed away shortly after leaving the operating table. Joseph Edward Monroe was born in Canton, Ohio August 22, 1893. Left an orphan at the age of six years, he was given help and training by his grandparents until 12 (printing blurry here) years of age; from which time he made his own living, gaining such education as opportunity offered. This homeless boy, in turning his hand to whatever honest job offered him the returns necessary to meet the needs of warmth and food lands in his early twenties in the state of Washington. He entered the World War Service as a private, on May 12th, 1918 at Camp Lewis, state of Washington. He served with the Depot Brigade at Camp Lewis from May 12, 1918 until June 20, 1918. Then with Company D. 348 Machine Gun Battalion from June 20, 1918 until April 27, 1919. In over sea service with the 91st Division. This Division saw much of active service. He received his honorable discharge from his country's service on April 27, 1919. On his discharge from this great service and in the hunt for work, the wheat fields of Kansas called this young man as it has many another. While living in Salina, Kansas, Mr. Monroe met Verna Davidson. After a short courtship they were married in Kansas City, Mo., on July 5, 1922 where each obtained good positions and where they lived very happily for more than two years; giving up their positions only on account of Mrs. Monroe's health. Feeling that a change of climate might be beneficial to them both they drove a car through to Seattle, Washington where they lived almost a year, then moving to San Francisco, California where they lived for about one and a half years. They were here for a visit with Mrs. Monroe's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Davidson, and expecting to leave within a week for Denver, Colorado to make their residence there. Death came to Mr. Monroe through the explosion of a steam engine, "cause unknown," injuring and endangering the lives of all who were there. Without suffering Joseph Edward Monroe passed to his reward on January 8th, 1927 age 33 years, 4 months and 16 days. He was kind and considerate to all near him, and endeared himself to all with whom he became acquainted. His kindly and cheerful disposition made him an ideal companion, a loving husband.
