Bush Graveside Service Graveside services for Verna B. Bush, Long Beach, Calif., were conducted Monday, June 11 at 10 a.m. at the Glasco Cemetery, Glasco, by Rev. John Grummon of the Baptist Church, Simpson. Verna Belle Davidson was the first-born child of William Alfred "Wid" Davidson and Arvilla Jane (Williamson) Davidson. She was born Aug. 3, 1896, at the home of her paternal grandparents, Calvin Davidson and Anna (Franks) Davidson, in Solomon Township, Cloud County, Kansas. She died June 1, 1984, at Long Beach, Calif., at the age of 87 years, nine months and 29 days. Verna attended the eight grades and was graduated from Fairview Rural School, District 58 in Cloud County. She attended Kansas State Agricultural College in Manhattan one year; then completed the secretarial course at Kansas Wesleyan Business College in Salina, Kans. Verna was employed many years in Kansas Cit y, Mo. She was secretary to a prominent physician who with some other doctors formed a medical clinic. Later she worked as a secretary for Lever Brothers. In the early 1920's Verna married Joseph Monroe. Joe at 33 years of age was tragically killed when a steam boiler exploded at a saw mill on Verna's parents' farm Jan. 8, 1927. Verna and Richard Bush were married Oct. 2, 1941, at Jefferson City, Mo. Both worked in Kansas City until the war years of the mid-1940's when Dick taught music in the Simpson schools. Later Verna and Dick Bush bought and operated a motel complex at Albuquerque, N. Mex. After several successive cold winters, Verna and Dick sold out and moved to California. There they established and operated an employment agency at Long Beach. Dick died in the late 1950's. Verna and Dick lived in an apartment complex at the edge of the ocean. Their second story windows looked out onto the engineer-built pier on which was located the Long Beach Sports Arena. After Dick died Verna continued living there. She loved the excitement of events taking place just below her front windows -- the annual Long Beach Grand Prix Auto Race, tourists going to and coming from the Queen Mary British ship that the city of Long Beach purchased and anchored permanently in their harbor, seeing the activities of the U.S. Navy in the harbor, sporting events at the Sports Arena. Verna managed to live alone and care for herself with very little help from anyone after her eyesight had failed. She prided herself in being independent. However two years ago her health worsened and she moved to a nursing home. Throughout her adult life Verna was interested in what was going on in the nation and in the world. She kept abreast of the news by reading a good daily newspaper and listening to the radio. After her eyesight failed she continued keeping current with the radio. People who have had the privilege of visiting with Verna remarked that she was a well-informed conversationalist. Verna's immediate family who have preceded her in death were her father "Wid" who died in 1943; her mother Arvilla who died in 1964; her brothers, Paul who died in 1970, and Don who died in 1977; her sister Evelyn who died in 1981. Her two living brothers are Bryan Davidson and Leland Davidson, both of Simpson. She also leaves to mourn her passing her sisters-in-law, her brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Verna Belle Davidson Bush remained young in spirit and trusting in God to the end. She constantly delighted in hearing what the young folks of her family were doing. Pallbearers were Willard Cobb, William Davidson, Reed Griest, Bill Martin, Max Martin, Douglas Newland.
