Description	:	One of the worst traffic accidents in Franklin County's long list of terrible accidents occurred late last Friday night about three miles south of Brookville on U.S. 52. Joseph Eugene Banks, age 34, and his wife, the former Rita Lorenz, age 30, lost their lives in the crash and their three sons are in Margaret Mary Hospital at Batesville. Ronald, age 5, is reported to have received a skull fractures and other injuries; John, age 3, has a skull fracture and leg injuries; and Jerry, age 2, received cuts and bruises. The accident which occurred about eleven o'clock was investigated by State Troopers Robert J. Cline and Gordon Redwine, Deputy Sheriff Harry Moore and Franklin County Coroner Dr. Walter A. Foreman. According to Trooper Cline, a grain truck driven by Earl Cooley, age 54, of Route 2, Brookville, and a car driven by Ora Morrison sideswiped going through a bridge over a culvert, just south of the Ariens' residence on U.S. 52. The truck went off of the road into a field while the Morrison car, with one side torn off as a result of the crash, careened into the path of the car driven by "Gene" Banks and the two vehicles hit head-on. Cooley was arrested by the State Troopers and charges of drunken driving have been filed against him in Franklin County Circuit Court. He has been released on $1,000 bond. Mr. Banks died shortly after the crash while Mrs. Banks died on the way to the hospital. The Banks are buried at St. Michael Cemetery. (Article from the July 17, 1952 Brookville Democrat)
