Was born in Stoneham, Vermont, April 13th, 1820, making him 76 years old the 13th of last month. The Judge had been failing rapidly for the last four months and was conscious he had but a short time to live, and gathered together his children, all of whom were at his bedside when death finally came. J.F. BLISS came to the Falls early in the spring of 1857, procuring a claim on Coal Creek, three miles north of town. He made some improvements on his place, but did not take a particular fancy to farming, so moved to town and built him a little house about the beginning of the war. Besides acting in the capacity of Justice of the Peace, he taught school in a number of the districts about the Falls. When Gov. CARNEY organized the militia previous to the Price raid, the Judge joined one of the companies raised in that neighborhood, and afterwards connected himself in the employ of Uncle Sam, but not to any regiment, acting in the capacity of detective, or any other service called upon to do. The Judge had political aspirations and was conspicuous in the politics of that day, which consisted of Lane and anti-Lane, arraying himself on the Lane side. In the fall of 1868 he was elected Probate Judge of Jefferson county, and succeded himself two years afterwards filling the position for four years. When first elected he was living on his farm above the Falls, but traded it for what was then known as the Pioneer House in Oskaloosa, where he has lived ever since up to his death. The Judge was an old Mason, and was a charter member of the Lodge at the Falls, from which he never severed his membership. The old settlers are fast falling by the wayside. Who will be the next to answer roll call? It was only last fall the writer of thise lines rode to the Falls and back with Mr. BLISS to attend the funeral of Brother E.M. HUTCHINS, and who in open lodge spoke feelingly of the many virtues of the dear departed. Then the judge was robust and hearty, and had no thought that his time was so near, but was iving in pleasing anticipation of a golden wedding, having married his present wife, who maiden name was Julia A. CONANT, on the 28th day of March, 1848. But there is a Reaper whose name is Death, who comes when not expected, and with his sickle keen, "reaps the bearded grain with a breath," and spoils all calculations. Just to it was with the Judge, yet let us hope he was prepared and "died with the birth of another day," in the realms of eternal peace. P. The Oskaloosa Times Saturday May 8, 1896 Joseph F. BLISS was born in Shortham, Vermont, April 13th, 1820, and died May 7, 1896, aged seventy-six years, three weeks and four days. He came to Kansas in 1856 and has resided in Jefferson county since that time until his death. He has lived in Oskaloosa twenty-seven years. He had been failing in health for several years, and during the past winter and spring had felt that his life on earth would soon be ended. For several years he had felt that within the Catholic church were to be found the saving sacraments institued by Jesus Christ for the salvation of men, therefore he was baptized by the Rev. Father KUHLS, of Kansas City, and received the day before his death, the last sacrament of the church, extreme unction, or the anointing with holy oil according to the scripture. James:V 14. Bliss to the eternal camp ground on the other shore, therefore be it Resolved, That in the death of Comrade Bliss the Grand Army of the Republic has lost a loyal member, the county a worthy citizen and the family a loving, faithful husband and father. Resolved,That the sympathy of this Post be extended to the aged widow and children of our late comrade, and that the charter of the Post be draped for the period of thirty days.
