THE ENTERPRISE regrets to chronicle the death of Joie F. Entler, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Entler. The death occurred about 3 o'clock this morning, pneumonia being the cause. The boy was aged 10 years, and was a promising child, and the people sincerely sympathize with the bereaved family in the loss of one so dear." ~~~ ** Date of newspaper is not always the date of the incident - this was a weekly, and stories were written, set, and the printing was done after the facts were typeset, often days later. Chico Weekly Chronicle-Record, Saturday, March 28, 1896, pg 3 col 3: In Memorium. The funeral of Joie F. Entler was a very sad, yet beautiful affair. Thos. Jensen, the undertaker, furnished carriages for Joie’s classes at the Normal and at the public schools. At the funeral the members of the classes formed in double lines facing each other, while the pallbearers, chosen from among the classmates, carried the beautiful casket between the ranks. Joie F. Enter, son of J.E. and Mary Entler was born Oct. 12, 1885, and died March 24, 1896. Joie was more than an average boy in many respects. His physical development was very fine for one of his years. He was large, well proportioned and very handsome. His disposition cheerful and happy. In spirit he was gentle, kind and affectionate. In the most painful moments of his last illness his mother’s caresses were rewarded by fond kisses. His large, bright face wreathed in smiles was an index to the bouyant and loving soul within. He attracted the attention and won the admiration of all with whom he came in contact. He possessed a high order of intellect and was devoted to books. At home he and his book were almost inseparable. His retentive memory was stored with a fund of knowledge unusually large one of his age. In school he was ambitious and studious and stood high in his classes. He was a favorite both with his teachers and school mates. When the sad news of his death was reported in the training department of the Normal every token of grief and esteem was exhibited. His desk was laden with beautiful flowers and the blackboard on which he worked was draped with similar tokens of tender affection. His teacher with a large number of his fellow students attended the funeral at the family residence and with a very large procession followed his remains to the grave, where they joined in singing “Nearer My God to Thee.” But it was not the handsome face or the bright and sparkling mind that constituted his chief attractions. It was his purity of soul and good that gave to his life its chief beauty. He was a religious child. He loved the church and the Sabbath school. His attention to preaching was marked. He treasured up the text and much of the discourse and gladdened the heart of his aged grandmother by repeating them to her on his return from church. While camping in the mountains last summer with his parents, he recognized the want of privileges among the children of the community, which he sought to supply by organizing a Sabbath school. By his personal solicitations he gathered the children into his own home, where they were taught from Sabbath to Sabbath. His works will follow him, and around the little missionary his sheaves will be gathered. The parents have the sympathy of the entire community and Joie’s memory will be cherished by a host of friends both old and young. – C.O.
