Brother Gattermeier was treasurer of the I.O.O.F. lodge of Olean for 27 years. He was also treasurer of the Olean Lodge of A.F. & A.M. for a number of years, and in good standing with both lodges at the time of his decease. Joseph Gattermeier came to Olean in 1881 and with his two brothers-in-law, Edward A. and Ben Zwanzig, took charge of the Flour Mill near Olean, then known as the Buckeye Mill. They improved and brought this up to an up-to-date and first class mill, which they operated until same was destroyed by fire in 1895, after which he, with the late Joseph Goodman, rebuilt on the same site and with the assistance of his sons, operated this mill until 1916 when it was totally destroyed by tornado. Mr. Gattermeier then organized the present "Olean Milling Company" located at present site, near Depot. Mr. Gattermeier was an industrious, energetic and hard-working man and having the good will and confidence of all who knew him soon had established a good and going business which is continuing under the able management of his sons. As a friend who has known him long and known him well, and has known him in a business way, in a social way and as a neighbor and friend, words are inadequate to express the esteem of those who knew him best. He was a progressive citizen, always ready to help any forward looking movement for the good of the town or community. He was a patriotic, loyal citizen, upright, honest, dependable, a true and loyal neighbor and a faithful friend, one on whom with confidence could rely. Brother Joseph Gattermeier was a Mason and a man. One who has brought a heritage to this community not to be soon forgotten.
