When a young man he moved to lot 2, con. 1, Amaranth, on the east side of the 2nd line, directly opposite the homestead, where his grandfather, Charles Gillespie, had settled about 110 years ago. Here he erected a set of fine farm buildings and farmed in a large way for the greater part of his life. Mr. Gillespie was a shrewd judge of livestock and livestock values and usually ran a large holding of cattle. After retiring from the farm he spent some years in Toronto, looking after city property in which he was interested. He was twice married, first to Miss Sarah Ann Buchanan, The Maples, and later to Miss Margaret Speers, of Caledon, who died a number of years ago. He is survived by a family of four sons, William J. and Charles B., hardware merchants in Orangeville, Dalton, on the home farm in Amaranth, and Fred on an adjoining farm, two brothers, Chas. Gillespie, Toronto, and William H. Gillespie, Amaranth, and one sister, Mrs. J. J. Kelly, of Long Island, N. Y. Mr. Gillespie was an excellent neighbor and a man of energy and enterprise. He was one of the oldest members of St. Andrew's church, Orangeville, and for a number of years gave splendid service as a church elder. He was always keenly interested in the Dufferin Agricultural Society and served as President for three years, 1915, 16 and 17. He was indefatigable in his work for the Society and when he gave way to his successor it was with a fine record of accomplished work. He improved the grounds, was instrumental in building two of the present barns and when he retired the Society had invested $1000 in a Victory bond and had a substantial cash balance in the treasury. There was a large attendance of neighbors and friends, a number of the latter from a distance, at the funeral, which was held from the home of his son, Dalton, to Greenwood cemetery on Monday afternoon. Rev. M. C. Mackinnon, pastor of St. Andrew's church, was in charge of the services at the home and graveside. The pallbearers were John A. and Fred Braiden, Arthur and George Gillespie, four nephews, W. H. Hunter and I. H. Murphy. The lovely flowers were carried by William Jos., Grant, Walter and Verral Gillespie, grandsons, Mel Walker and Ross Morrow. The flowers were: Pillow, the family; wreaths, W. H. Gillespie and family; St. Andrew's church; Sprays, Charles Gillespie; Bill and Isobel; May and Violet Braiden; Mrs. Wm. Morrow and Ross; Mr. and Mrs. I. H. Murphy and family; baskets, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Lang and Mrs. Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Irvine and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Irvine. Joseph Gillespie passed away in Lord Dufferin hospital in Orangeville, on Saturday afternoon, October 30th, in his 88th year. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gillespie, he was a member of one of Amaranth township's oldest families.
