He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Hot Springs, Fall River Co., South Dakota. Frenchtown, Nebraska is situated in the western part of Antelope County, on rolling prairie, gently sloping toward the streams. Farther back, the land is somewhat hilly and devoid of timber, but along the streams some timber grows. The place was named Frenchtown on account of the predominance of French people among the early settlers. The first settlement was made here on August 9, 1869, by Louis Patras, Martin Freeman and Louis Contois. They were soon followed by Frank Patras, Andrew Thibault and James Grenier. The first child born in Frenchtown was Freddie Patras, in 1870; "the first marriage, that of Joseph Lessard to Miss Emma Thibault, in January, 1875"; and the first death, that of J. O. Grenier, by drowning. To support his family Joseph hauled water from Petty Springs to Lower Town and from Cold Brook to Upper Town [Hot Springs, South Dakota]. 1 Jul 1887 - News from the Hot Springs Star J. H. Lessard operated Metropolitan Restaurant, Chicago Ave. News from May 14, 1897 Hot Springs Star: Harry Lessard returned from Gillette the fore part of the week and was at once employed as chef at the Gillespie. News from September 30, 1898 Hot Springs STAR: Scott C. Snively, a cousin of D.K. was in the city Monday, having come overland from Ardmore with Chris Jensen. Mr. Snively represents the Felix Coal company, of Sheridan, Wyo., who established an agency here with J.H. Lessard as agent. OBITUARY: Hot Springs Star, July 13, 1926: Joseph Lessard, pioneer resident of Hot Springs, died at his residence on College Hill July 10. He was born in Quebec, Dec 5, 1846. For the past thirty-nine years he has made his home in Hot Springs. His wife preceded him in death about two years ago and the death of his son James occurred last winter. Six children survived him: Mrs. C.H. Smith, Polson, Mont., A.J. Lessard, Hot Springs; Mrs. C.H. Volin, Edgemont; Jack Lessard, Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. C.P. Dalbey, Sioux Falls, and Miss Marion Lessard of Hot Springs.
