Charley has been visiting in Brewster for the past six months with his brothers Dan and Joe. Mr. Gamble's parents are both dead. Mr. Gamble took out his naturalization papers a few years ago and became a citizen of the United States. Joe Gamble was educated in the grade schools and raised in a country where the main industry was lumbering, his father, Robert Gamble was interested in that business and Joe followed the work in the woods until he came to Brewster about twenty years ago on a visit to his brother Dan. He liked this county so well that he decided to remain here and has since been interested in the lumbering business here with his brother. During his boyhood he was considered one of the best axmen in his community and often too part in chopping bees. About 1915 Mr. Gamble had a very severe attack of typhoid fever here in Brewster and it left him with a weak heart and in a general weekend condition which he has never overcome and which eventually cased his death. He made a trip east to his old home after this illness in hopes of recovering his health and remained there about a year but could not resist the call of the west so he came back to Brewster where he has since lived, being at the Gamble mill on Paradise Hill a number of years and the past five or six years in charge of their business here in town. At the time of his death he was a member of the city council and the commercial club. His wife and children and Mr. Gamble were all interested in the work of the Congregational Church and Mr. Gamble was always a willing given for the church benefit. In fact at the time the church was built the Gamble Lumber Company were among the heavy donators. He has always been interested in civic improvements and a loyal worker in the local IOOF and Rebecca lodges, of which he was a charter member. He was one of the most influential members of the council in getting our new water system and the little log cabin of which we are so proud stands as a monument to him as it was thru his efforts and work that it was finally completed. He spent every spare minute a year ago this winter working on the log cabin and stayed with it until he had it completed. In passing we might add that he will be missed by the whole community, his lodge, church and friends, and that it is rarely that a man passes that you can say that he did not have a known enemy and was loved and respected by his community. In 1920 he was united in marriage to Myrtle Pulsipher. His last illness was partially due to the flu, he had a hard attack of flu followed by a heavy cold and it left him in a weakened condition and the past two months he has been very miserable and confined to his home most of the time. He was advised to go to the hospital and was taken to the hospital in Wenatchee about a week before he died. The doctors thought that he was improving but he had a severe heart attack and was not strong enough to withstand it. His wife and brother Dan were with him at the time of his passing. He was buried on Sunday at the Locust Grove cemetery here in Brewster, the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Barnum from the Congregational Church and the funeral was in charge of the IOOF lodge. The church was filled to overflowing with friends and lodge members from here and nearby towns.
