He went to a fence back of the house, where he put an end to his life with a shotgun. The story is a sad one. Some time ago his wife tried to get him convicted of insanity; failing in that she wanted to get a divorce, but could not. From the testimony of the witnesses it appears that his wife, son William and daughter Mary drove to Guttenberg Tuesday morning to meet their son and brother Herman, of Marcus, who came to take them to Cherokee and to take home a box to pack their clothing in. On arriving home they told Mr. Tuecke that they were going to leave in the evening. He wanted the two children to stay, but they refused. After dinner he went out to look at the box and returned to the house. His wife and children carried clothing to the box and when they came back the last time they found him dead near the fence. The gun was found near by over the fence. Coroner W. J. Beerman impaneled a jury consisting of Messrs. George M. Jacobs, M. B. Needham and Nick Marmann, which brought a verdict of death by shooting with suicidal intent. Deceased was born Jan. 15, 1851, at Ceres. In 1877 he married Sophia Schroeder. To this union were born six children, three boys and three girls all except one of whom are living. He was 51 years 8 months 26 days old at the time of his death. The funeral was held Friday P.M. at Ceres, services conducted by Rev. Bunge. The remains were laid to rest in the Ceres cemetery.
