The rooms were crowded with those who desired to pay a last tribute of respect to the memory of a well known citizen, friend and neighbor and the floral tributes, including those from the G.A.R. and W.R.C. and the Sons of the Veterans camp, were many and beautiful. Comrades of the Post bore him to his last long home in Greenwood Cemetery. Joseph Hoy was born at Lithopolis, Ohio, January 14, 1834 and was thus Seventy Nine Years and fifteen days old at the time of his death. He was united in marriage on Feburary 12, 1857, to Miss Amanda Hartman, and ten children were born to them, all of whom are still living. In 1861 he responded to the call of his country and joined the 68th Ohio Regiment, serving under General Grant, until Sherman's march to the sea. He was honorably discharged on August 10, 1865. In 1867 the family removed to Henry County, Ohio, where they lived until 1883, when they came to the then Territory of Dakota, settling in Spink county, remaining there until 1906, when they came to Brookings to live. In early life united with the Evangelical church and remained a member of the same until April 1908, when he united with the Methodist church of Brookings. Those who remain to mour his loss include his widow, six sons, four daughters and twenty eight grandchildren. The sons are Albert of Huron, Nathaniel of Meadow, Samuel of Washington, Ross of Tulare and Howard and Richard of Brookings, while the daughters are Mrs. Chas Sample of this city, Mrs. Dill of Superior, Wisconsin, Mrs. Allinson and Mrs. Bereman of Gary. They have the sympathy of many in their affliction. Mr. Hoy always took a great interest in religious and patriotic affairs. He was a most worthy citizen, a good father and a wonderful neighbor.
