Funeral services for Joseph Hunter, 85, who passed away late Friday afternoon after a lingering illness, were held at two o'clock at the Christian Church Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Charles M. Leaming of Waterloo and Rev. Lloyd Z. Patton conducting. Mrs. Jack Ashlock and L. J. Dennis, accompanied by Mrs. Earl Brannaman sang "Going Down the Valley" and "Rock of Ages." The pall bearers were Fred Hunter, Dave Hunter, Dr. V. G. Bromwell, George Floyd, W. J. Blake and Aquilla Andrews. Burial was in the Baptist cemetery at Green's Grove. The following life sketch was read at the funeral: Joseph Hunter, son of Joseph and Sarah Hunter, was born in New York State October 29, 1858 [sic? His monument lists 1859.] He passed away after a lingering illness, at his home in Center Point, Friday evening January 14, 1944, at the age of 85 years, two months, and seventeen days. Mr. Hunter was a pioneer settler of the Center Point community. He came to Iowa with his parents when he was but two years of age. The family located one mile west of the town-site. February 9, 1876 he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Morris. To this union three children were born – two sons Earl and Elmer and a daughter Blanch. Mrs. Hunter and two of the children, Earl and Blanch Potter, preceded Mr. Hunter in death. He leaves to mourn his passing one son Elmer of Center Point; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a brother Sam Hunter of Center Point and many other relatives and friends.
