Joseph "Joe" John Zumstein, Jr., 83, a life-long resident of Woodland, Washington, passed away at the family home on Sun., April 20, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. The better part of his life, some fifty years, was spent living at the farm. Joe was born on December 21, 1930 in Portland, Oregon to Joseph John Zumstein, Sr. and Carrie Marie Ritter. He attended Woodland schools starting in the first grade and graduated from Woodland High School in 1949, all in Woodland, Washington. Joe met his wife, Cheril Mae Hess, when she moved to town in the seventh grade and the "High School Sweethearts" were married in 1951 when Joe returned from boot camp. She went with him as Joe served four years in the Navy during the Korean War conflict. They were stationed in Tacoma, Washington, San Diego, California, and Guam during his enlistment. Upon his return to Woodland, the call of the timber industry beckoned and became his way of life for the next 60 years. He began driving a log truck and quickly purchased a truck of his own. By 1959, he owned and operated Joe Zumstein Logging Company in Woodland, Washington and was buying salvage sales and doing contract logging for big timber companies. He loved the woods and his association with his many employees, some who were with him for over 40 years. With a very determined, nature he worked relentlessly and was able to get the job done. Recognizing the need for a local source of logging supplies, Joe purchased a saw shop in Woodland, Washington and in 1971 started Woodland Logging Supply, a full service rigging shop and one of the first Stihl dealers in the Pacific Northwest. Because his three sons had an interest in motocross racing, in the mid 1970's, Joe helped to restore the Woodland Winter track in Woodland, Washington and together they ran it for several seasons. When he wasn't logging, he was farming. Raising beef cattle and working the land with his family on the farm were his recreation. Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Cheril; his sons, Darryl , Brent and wife Sharon, Joel and Tiffany; his daughter, Jolynn and husband Rick Klaus. He leaves beloved grandchildren, Jerrad, Janae, Jalise, Jeff, Ashley, Ryan, Bradley, Kristi, Robert, Katie, Kara; and great-grandchildren, MaeLee, Gracie, Aubree, Brynlee, Lizzy, Becca, Logan and Owen. His surviving brothers and sisters are, Mildred Scott, Don Zumstein, Carol Hogan, Lavern Fredrickson and Robert Zumstein. Joe was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Woodland First Ward in Woodland, Washington. His funeral was held on Saturday, April 26th, 2014 at the LDS chapel, 281 Insel Road, in Woodland, Washington. Burial followed at Hayes Cemetery, also in Woodland.
