Read More	The Lawrence Locomotive (Lawrence, NE), Thursday, January 24, 1935; pg. 1 St. Stephens Man Called Early Sunday Joseph Kathman, resident on the farm near St. Stephens for over forty years, passed away early Sunday morning at his home at the ripe old age of 86 years, 1 month and 10 days. Debilities of advanced age and sclerosis was pronounced as the cause. Mr. Kathman was born on December 4, 1849, at Ludlow, Kentucky where he lived until the age of nineteen. As a lad he helped his father, who owned a dairy at that place and later worked in a foundry at Cincinnati crossing the Ohio river daily on a ferry. He moved later with his parents to Ferdinand, Ind., where they located on a farm and in 1870 was united in marriage to Elisabeth Heilers. The bonds of this marriage were broken in 1876 by the death of the wife, who took an infant son to the grave with her and left three children, Anna (Sister Mary Afra of the Ursuline order at York, Neb.) who died 32 years ago, Mrs. Mary Schrandt now of Plainville, Kansas. and Ben Kathman of this vicinity. On Feb 20, 1878, he was married to Kathrine Goetkin at Festina, la. residing than until November 1893 when the entire family moved to Nebraska, locating on the farm 3 miles south and 1 mile east of Lawrence, his home for the remainder of his life. With his wife, who survives him, he celebrated his golden wedding anniversary in 1928 in the presence of his children, grandchildren and many friends. Children surviving from his second marriage are William of Mt. Clare, Mrs. Fred Brockman, Mrs. Henry Pohlmeier, Edward, Frank and Henry Kathman of Lawrence, Mrs. John Hoelting of Oconto, Neb. and Joseph Jr. Cunningham Kansas. All except the last named were present for the funeral. He also leaves two brothers, Henry of Lebanon, Mo. and George of Cincinnati and a sister Mrs. E. Van Gorder, also of Cincinnati, besides 64 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Stephens Wednesday morning in charge of the pastor, Rev. A. Hahn and burial was made in St. Stephens cemetery. Pall bearers were six grandsons of the deceased: Joe Schrandt, Norbert Brockman, Alfred and George Kathman, Alvin and Alto Pohlmeier. ======================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, January 31, 1935; pg. 1 A pioneer settler of St. Stephens precinct, Jos. Kathman, passed away January 20 at the age of 85 years. He was a native of Kentucky. Children surviving are Mrs. Mary Schrandt, Plainville, Kansas; Ben, Mrs. Fred Brockman, Mrs. Henry Pohlmeier, Edward, Frank and Henry all of Lawrence; Mrs. John Hoelting, Oconto, Nebraska; Joseph, Jr., Cunningham, Kansas; William of Mt. He is survived by his wife and the following children: William of Mt. Clare, Mrs. Fred Brockman, Mrs. Henry Pohlmeier, Edward, Frank and Henry Kathman of Lawrence, Mrs. John Hoelting of Oconto, and Joseph Jr. of Cunningham, Kansas.
