Hastings, 70, Berryton, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Hastings worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years before he retired as manager of distribution in 1984. He began his career in 1956 as a clerk and had served in many positions throughout his career. He also worked in transportation for Shawnee Heights Unified School District No. 450 for 25 years. He served in the Navy from 1946 to 1957 and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was discharged at the rank of 1st class petty officer. He was born Aug. 8, 1929, at Grantville, the son of John C. and Lennie Seal Hasting. He attended school in Grantville and he had lived in Berryton since 1959. Mr. Hasting was a member of Berryton United Methodist Church and Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion in Topeka. He married M. Jean Taylor on March 6, 1953, in Hernanda, Miss. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Vickie Jo Hinson and Jeanie C. Hutcheson, both of Berryton; a son, John L. Hasting, Columbus, Ga.; three sisters, Joan Lynn, Berryton, Irene Saddall, Rome, N.Y., and Mildred Carroll, Lenexa; and four grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid- Town Chapel. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery southeast of Topeka. Mr. Hasting will lie in state after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. The casket will remain closed. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berryton United Methodist Church, 7010 S.E. Berryton Road, Berryton, 66409.
