Medical skill together with the loving care of his wife and children prolonged his life and did all possible for him as he drifted into the Valley of the shadow. Joseph Lester Butler was born north of Oelwein, May 5, 1874, the son of Harrison and Mary Meikle Butler. His forebears were early settlers and helped build this community. He attended the rural schools in his youth and later received an excellant education in the school business experience. In his early life he was engaged in farming. In 1899, he came to Oelwein and entered the feed and grain business and continued in this occupation until 1923 when he became secretary of the Oelwein Farmer's creamery. In 1932 he with his sons Lloyd and Lyle, organized the Butler Coal company which today is one of the thriving businesses of Oelwein. He was untited in marriage November 27, 1901 to Elizabeth Grace Rundle in the home which they had previously furnished in Oelwein. Three children were born to this union. Lloyd R. and Lyle H. Butler and Mrs. Raymond (Ethel) Meyer, all of Oelwein. He is survived by his wife and three children, five grandchildren, three brothers, Jay Butler of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, A. L. and Earl Butler both of Oelwein. Mr. Butler was a man of highest integrity whose word was as good as his bond and a man of excellent business ability. He was a kind husband and father and was highly esteemed by his neighbors and friends. For the past 27 years he had been a member of Grace Methodist church and served in different capacities on the board. Also a member of Hebron Lodge No. 374 and of the Order of the Eastern Star. Last services where held Sunday April 13, at Grace Methodist church with the Rev. J.W. Marlin officiating. The Masonic services were conducted by Past Master Irvin Ecker and Chaplin C.F. Perron. Music was furnished by Mrs. Sophia Tait at the organ and Mrs. Rollin Nelson and Russell W. Brant. Bearers were George Lee, Art Schrack, Walter Feltus, Claude King, Clay Hallberg, J.B. Henderson, Albert Koehler and Joe Englehart. The attendance of the many friends and floral offerings attested the esteem in which this citizen was held. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
