Doniphan County, Kansas. - 1865 Kansas State Census. 1870: He is living in Wolf River Twp., Severance, Doniphan County, Kansas. - 1870 U.S. Census 1880: On April 18, 1880,he married Margaret Jane Ware at Severance, Doniphan County, Kansas. 1880: He and Margaret were farming near Whiting, Jackson County, Kansas when their first child, Arthur Andrew Vandeveer was born on June 21, 1880. 1887: Joseph & Margaret were living at Table Rock, Pawnee County, Nebraska when their daughter, Emma Alberta Vandeveer was born on July 13, 1887. 1887: School Census Record shows Arthur Andrew as a student at Highland Center, Dawes County, Nebraska. 1893: Margaret Jane Ware Vandeveer died on May 11 1893 at Pine Summit, Dawes County, Nebraska as a result of childbirth. Joseph and Margaret had four children of which two survived infancy. 1893/94: Joseph sent Emma to live with Margaret's parents (John Andrew Jackson Ware and Rachel Ann VanHorn Ware) at Severance, Doniphan County, Kansas. Joseph and Nannie raised Arthur Andrew. 1894: On October 24, 1894 Joseph married Nannie May Alexander at Chadron, Dawes County, Nebraska. 1897: The first of six childen of Joseph & Nannie was born in Courtland, Republic Co., Kansas. The names of the six childen are: William (Willie), Clarence, Howard Milton, Clara, Corrine, and Leroy. Howard Milton Vandeveer is the only child to survive to adulthood. Howard was born on September 10, 1906 at Courtland, Kansas, married Dot Ann Burright, had four children that I know of, and died at El Cajon, San Diego County, California on December 20, 1985. Joseph Long Vandeveer died on December 8, 1928 at Courtland, Republic County, Kansas and is buried in the Courtland Cemetery. Obituary: Courtland Journal, Dec. 13, 1928 JOSEPH L. VANDEVEER oldest son of Arthur and Emily Vandeveer, was born in Holt county, Missouri, January 23, 1858 and, after several months of suffering, passed away at his home near Courtland, Kansas, aged 70 years, 10 months and 15 days. In early boyhood he moved to Doniphan county, Kansas, where he grew to manhood. He was marrried to Miss Janie Ware of Severance, Kansas April 18, 1878, later moving to Dawes Co., Nebraska. Four children were born to this union, two of whom survive him, Mrs. Emma Knecht of Leona, Kansas, and Arthur A. Vandeveer of Calver City, California. In 1893 his wife passed to the great beyond. He was married to Nannie May Alexander Oct. 24, 1894. Of six children born to this union only Howard M. of Courtland is now living. They returned to Kansas in 1897, and he has since resided in Republilc county, the past 25 years in Courtland township. Mrs. Vandeveer passed away Feb. 4, 1926, after a lingering illness, during which he patiently and tenderly cared for her. Mr. Vandeveer was ever a true neighbor and friend. He was always ready to lend his sympathy and aid to any one in sorrow or need. He loved all children and was known as "Uncle Joe" to every child of his acquaintance. He will be long rememered for his cheery disposition, his pleasant manner and his many kindly deeds. Beside his children, he leaves to mourn his departure, he brothers, John of Scandia, Thomas of Jackson, Tenn, sister Mrs. Ella Cline of Copeland, Kansas, 16 grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends in the community where he lived so long. Funeral services were held at Christian church Courtland Sunday afternnoon, Rev. O.J. Lundberg, pastor of Scandia M.E. church preaching the sermon. Mrs. R. Macy, Mrs. F.C. Granstedt, C.C. Green, Lloyd Aspergren, Mrs. C.C. Green pianist, furnished appropriate music. Pallbearers were John Fredrickson, Theo. Danielson, Albert Workman, Gust Samuelson, Chas. Matnusson, Frank Sallman. Burial in Courtland cemetery. Those from distance attending the funeral were Fred Knecht, wife, son Frederick and daughter Marie, Mrs. P.N. Leonard and daughter Irma of Leona, Kansas, Carl Frazieer wife and son of Fairview, Oklahoma.
