Keenan in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nelson, Nebraska. The Very Rev. John W. Kelley, F.G., and the Rev. Paul Fangman offered the Requiem High Mass. The church choir, accompanied by organist Susie Sekora, sang for the services. Acolytes were Dan Mazour, Rick Mazour, Rick Sekora, and Ron Sekora. Military services were conducted by the Nelson American Legion and V.F.W. Posts. Casket bearers were Leon Elsey, Rudy Jirkovsky, Charles Phillips, Finis Reid, Orville Schroeder, and Harold Shaw. Honorary pallbearers were Bluford Cannon, R.L. Culbertson, James Mazour, Jerome Mazour, Howard Olson, Virgil Schleif, C.E. Wehrman, Sr., and Homer Wehrman, Sr. Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery. The Rosary was recited Monday evening at the Klawitter Funeral Home. Mr. Joseph L. Keenan was born May 20, 1920 in Spalding, Nebraska, to William S. Keenan and Della Mae Hooker. He spent all of his boyhood in Spalding and graduated from Spalding High School with the class of 1937. His ability as a fine musician showed itself at an early age, and throughout his life he happily shared this gift, bringing enjoyment to others. After graduation, he taught in the rural schools in Greeley County for four years. He then entered the military service during World War II and played in the Army Air Corps Band. After his discharge he ran a service station in Spalding for eight years. During this time he married Mary Brand, and five children were born to this union. Returning to his teaching career in 1956, he taught music at Greeley High School, at Verdigre, and at Clarks. He then moved to Ohiowa, Nebraska, where he taught music, kindergarten, and third grade. After moving to Nelson, he taught in Nora, in Hebron at the School of New Hope, and, until the time of his illness, in Superior at the Mid-Nebraska Vocational Services. During this time he also enjoyed teaching Christian Doctrine for five years in Superior. Throughout his teaching career, he attended Wayne State Teachers College, Chadron State Teachers College, and The University of Nebraska. During his lifetime he was active in several organizations: F.O.E., American Legion, V.F.W., Central Nebraska Musicians Association, the Maverick Band, and the Rotary Club. He also served both as President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Spalding Alumni Association. As President of the Nuckolls County Teachers Association he represented them at the N.S.E.A. Convention. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. Survivors include his widow, Mary; three daughters, Diane, Mary Jo, and Rosalie; two sons, William and James, all of Nelson; a brother, Wayne of Amarillo, Texas; and a sister, Evelyn Zahm of Spalding, Nebraska. Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral were from Amarillo, Texas; Cozad, Davenport, Geneva, Greeley, Hastings, Lawrence, Lincoln, Madison, Nora, Oak, Ohiowa, Omaha, Primose, Reynolds, Ruskin, Spalding, Superior, and York, Nebraska. Many people from Nelson and many students from Nelson High School were also present at the services.
