Emerson Joe Emerson, born September 29, 1904 near LaCrosse, Washington, died peacefully, surrounded by his four children, Monday, January 14, 2002, at the age of 97. Joe was raised in the LaCrosse area, where he met and married Christine Slind in 1934. Together they farmed in the Dayton, WA area until retirement in the 1970s and moved to Tacoma, WA. Throughout his retirement he was very active with his woodworking, making thousands of items for friends and family. Fishing was also a passion and many days found Joe in his boat on lakes or Puget Sound. After losing his wife of 65 years in 2000, Joe moved to Sun Terrace Assisted Living in Prosser, WA at the age of 95. Within a few months he had converted some open space at Sun Terrace into a wood shop. He continued his woodworking until a week before his passing. Six to seven hours a day in the shop were common for Joe, where he continued to design and build items for family, friends and many at Sun Terrace. He also produced craft items for others to use and supplied items for the retirement home gift shop. Joe is survived by his four children: Inez Hughes and husband Jack of Pasco, WA; Camille Eliason and husband Iver of Tacoma, WA; Vern and Kathy Emerson of Nampa, Idaho; L.J. and Ginger Emerson of Grandview, WA; and a sister, Lila Kneale of LaCrosse, WA. Joe had 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great- great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, January 17, 2002 at Lutheran Church of Christ the King, 1710 85th Street East in Tacoma, WA, where he was a mem- ber for 30 years. Visitation is from 9:00-10:30 AM, followed by an 11:00 AM family graveside service at Fir Lane Memorial Park, 924 176th East, Spanaway, WA. Memo rials in his name may be given to the church. Fir Lane Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
