Born on August 8, 1927 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph Marion Gough, Sr. and Violet Sophia Mattingly Gough. During World... Read More	Joseph Marion Gough, 78, of Leonardtown, MD, died on November 9, 2005 in Nashville, TN. Born on August 8, 1927 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph Marion Gough, Sr. and Violet Sophia Mattingly Gough. Mr. Gough was a 1941 graduate of Leonard Hall School, a 1945 graduate of St. Mary's Academy and a 1952 graduate of and received a BA in Economics from Mount St. Mary's College of MD where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Epsilon Sigma and attended Rutgers and Ohio State for banking management graduate studies. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps as a PFC stationed in China with B Company, 29th Division. Began work at The First National Bank of St. Mary's in June 1952. He worked his way through the ranks to become President, CEO in March 1968 and Chairman of the Board in 1976 retired as President and CEO in March of 1992 continuing as Chairman until March 1998. Mr. Gough held the office of President of the Maryland Bankers Association and Director of the Federal Reserve Board, treasurer for the Navy Alliance and the St. Mary's County Historical Society, a member of American Legion Post #54, Leonardtown, MD, served as chairman of the Planning and Zoning Board for 17 years and on the Planning Commission for 25 years, a member of the State Commission of Real Estate, the Southern Maryland Society and in 1985 was named the Business Man of the Year. He was awarded the Cross Bottony for the preservation and interpretation of Maryland history. Mr. Gough was an active member and patron of numerous civic, community and charitable organizations. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, patron of many religious orders. He loved the State of Maryland, St. Mary's County, Leonardtown, his daughters, his sisters and brother, and his grandchildren. He was a fan of the Washington Redskins and Maryland Basketball. Mr. Gough's hobbies were reading a good mystery, history, economics and the Bible, shooting doves – missing them, a walk through the fields with a good dog, music: classical, big bands, swing and opera, a game of Bridge, going to Europe and travel of any kind. He also enjoyed nature, science, a gentle rain and a good classic movie. He is survived by his daughters, JoAnn Gough of Leonardtown, MD, Mary Leigh Harless of Lexington Park, MD, two grandchildren, Edelen Ann Harless and William Layne Harless, a step-grandson, Bryan Matthew Guy, three step- great grandchildren, Mychaela, Breanna and Brayden Guy, three sisters, Mary Catherine Thompson of Great Mills, MD, Jane Mattingly Gough of Leonardtown, MD, Massey H. Connelly of Leonardtown, MD, a brother of his heart, 1st cousin, Bernard F. Beavan of Leaonardtown, MD and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Morgan Broun Gough, whom he married on January 17, 1953 and an infant daughter, Ellen Lee Gough.
