D'SOTELS DEAD Quietly Passes Away At His Home Monday Evening HEART TROUBLE BRINGS END Deceased Was One of the Best Known Men in this Part of the County. Burial at Holy Cross At his home on Second street at 7:30 Monday evening Joseph M DeSotels, one of the best known persons in the southwestern part of Clayton county, passed away after a prolonged illness. Although having been confined to his home but a short time Mr. DeSotels has complained of ill health for several months. The cause directly respnsible for his death was heart failure. For a week or more previous to his death he had been unable to rest comfortably lying in bed owing to heart affection and was obliged to sit up the greater part of the time. Monday evening after supper he expressed a desire to be assisted from his easy chair to the bed, feeling the change of position would rest his weary body. He had been to bed but a short time when he asked to be again assisted to the chair. The request was complied with and he had no more than been placed in the chari when he passed away without a struggle. The only members of the family at home at the time being his three daughters Emma, May and Nellie. At the time of his death deceased was in his seventy third year, being 72 years, 7 months and 28 days old. He was born at Montreal, Canada, May 11, 1834. When twenty-two years of age he came to Iowa and to Clayton county with his parents and since then up until five years ago resided continuously on the farm in Millville township. Removing from the farm five years ago he came to Guttenberg and purchased the residence and property where he spent his remaining days. Feb. 7, 1864, he was united in marriage at Richardsville, in Dubuque county, to Miss Mary Brouillette. To them seventeen children were born, sixteen of whom, eight sons and eight daughters, survive their father; they are: Mrs. Wm. Kieefer, Chicago; Mrs. Chas. Le Page and John D. DeSotels, Dubuque; Mrs. G. J. Franks, Colesburg; August, Osterdock; Mrs. Geo. Blodgett, Mrs. J. E. Kauffman and Joe, Millville; William, Turkey River; Louis, Maxim, George, May, Emma, Nellie and Eddie of Guttenberg, the latter four of whom reside at home. Besides the surviving children are forty-two grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral was held yesterday (Thursday) morning at 9:00 o'clock with services at St. Mary's Catholic church, conducted by Rev. Father J. H. Brinkman, after which the body was convoyed to the Holy Cross cemetery in Dubuque county, and interred beside his wife who preceded him to the grave nine years ago. +++ Clayton County Journal, Guttenberg, IA, Friday, January 11, 1907, pg. 5, col. 6 At his residence, at 7 o'clock Monday evening, January 7, 1907, after seating himself in a chair, Joseph M. DeSotels died suddenly of heart disease, at the age of 72 years, 7 months and 26 days. Mr. DeSotels was born in Montreal, Canada, May 11, 1834, and came to Clayton county in July 1856. He was married at Rickardsville to Miss May Boette, July 7, 1864. After conducting a farm in Millville township for many years he moved to Guttenberg on the 12th of February, 1903. He is survived by sixteen children, forty-two grand children and one great-grand child. The sons and daughtes are Mrs. William Kieffer, Chicago; Mrs. Chas. LaPage and John, Dubuque; Mrs. G. J. Franks, Colesburg; August, Osterdock; Mrs. George Blodgett, Mrs. J. E. Kaufmann, Joe and William, Millville; Louis, Maxim and George of Guttenberg, and May, Emma, Nellie and Eddie at home. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock Thursday morning by Rev. J. H. Brinkmann. Desotels, is a son of Joseph Desotels, who was born in Canada, May 5, 1808, and from there moved to Chicago, where he resided two years, then went to Galena, Ill. He worked in the mines there fourteen years, and in 1848 came to Guttenberg, Iowa, where he resided two years, then removed to Buena Vista Township and engaged in mining there six years. He now resides on section 23, Millville Township. The subject of this memoir was born in Montreal, Canada, May 11, 1834, and came to Millville Township with his father in 1856. They own a farm of 200 acres of fine land on section 23, and are classed with the representative agriculturists and stock-breeders of Clayton County. He was married on Feb. 7, 1864, to Mary Brouilette, a native of St. Demos, Canada. Twelve children have been born of this union, viz.: Helena, born Feb. 27, 1865; Lucy, April 20, 1866; Emelia, Oct. 18, 1867; Louise, July 2, 1869; Louis, Dec. 22, 1870; Maxime, Jan. 26, 1872; Joseph, April 6, 1873; Josephine, born July 12, 1875, died May 16, 1876; August, born Nov. 17, 1876; William, Sept. 4, 1878; John, June 15, 1880, and Mary, Sept. 7, 1881. Mr. Desotels is a member of the Catholic church, and votes the Democratic ticket.
