Death of an Old Settler Joseph Miars was born in Clinton county, Ohio, Aug 20, 1829. His boyhood and youth were passed in his native state. He was married, on the 28th day of February 1854, to Mary Ellen Huffman, and to this union were born three sons and one daughter, all living, who, with the bereaved widow are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent parent. The deceased has lead an active life with days that were full of toil. Always a lover of horses he took great pleasure in driving. On the morning of his death, Monday, Nov. 28, although not well, he decided to go to Berrien Springs and consult his physician. His horse was hitched up and he started; but death came before the journey was half finished, and the horse proceeded with lines dragging until caught on the bridge, when he was led to the doctor's office, the occupant of the buggy examined and pronounced dead. The last time The Era had occasion to mention Mr. Miars was on the date of the fiftieth wedding anniversary, last February, at which time his family and friends all assembled to share with him the pleasures of that joyous event. But the great Reaper saw fit to call him to his last rest, and that call was answered probably without a single struggle. The funeral occurs today from his late home with internment at the Union cemetery. Parents were John William Miars and Catherine Myers.
