Miars, a resident of Berrien Center for many years and prominently known throughout Berrien and Cass counties, died Thursday night at Pawating hospital in Niles following a two weeks' illness. Mr. Miars was born in Berrien township and spent the greater part of his life there. He married Nora C. Hess in Berrien Center on March 10, 1892, and for many years they made their home on the farm just south of the village now owned by his son Kenneth Miars. He took a prominent part in the civic life of the community and for a number of years was leader of the Berrien Center band. A director of the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance company in Dowagiac for 28 years and president of the Wolverine Mutual Motor Insurance Co. of Dowagiac, he had become very well known throughout this section. He was retired at the time of his death and for the past ten years his son Victor has been associated with him in the insurance business, taking over most of the duties connected with the real estate and insurance office which he established 25 years ago at Niles. Surviving are his wife and six sons and daughters, Roy Miars of Berrien Center; Dr. Marion Miars of Detroit; Kenneth of Cleveland, Ohio; Victor and Mrs. William Stafford of Niles and Mrs. Selby Wills of Miami, Florida. There are several grandchildren and one great grandchild. Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church, a life member of the I.O.O.F. lodge, the Knights of Pythias and the Three Score and Ten club of Miami, Florida, where he and Mrs. Miars spent a number of winters.
