M. Kelly, oldest resident of Early, Thursday morning, June 14, at the Loring hospital at Sac City after a lingering illness of over three months. At the time of his death Mr. Kelley was 94 years, 9 months and 11 days old. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 16, at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart church with Rev. Father R.J. O'Rilly officiating at a Requiem High Mass sung by the Sacred Heart School choir. Burial was in the Sacred Heart cemetery. Pallbearers were: Francis Gard, Arnold Sampers, Earl Brady, Lester Struchen, Raymond Blass and Raymond Landgraff. On Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. the Rosary was recited by the Catholic Daughters at the Ralph Kelley home, at eight o'clock that evening, by the parish and at nine o'clock by the Knights of Columbus, led by Father O'Reilly. Joseph Michael Kelly was born September 3, 1861 near Colesburg in Delaware County and at the age of 17 came to Sac County, in company with his older brother, Walter, making the trip by team and wagon. He settled on a farm between Early and Schaller and on October 9, 1889, was married to Catherine Culligan. Mr. and Mrs. Kelley observed their Golden Wedding anniversary on October 9, 1939. Seven children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, who died in 1940, and sons Harold 1946, and Cecil in 1952. Survivors are his daughters, Mrs. Celesta Sullivan of Carroll and Mrs. Gerold Hoskins (Jackie) of Sac City, and three sons: Maj. J.W. Kelley of Atlanta, Ga., Basil of Miami, Fla., and Ralph of Early; 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Kelley organized the first Fire Department in Early and helped to organize the first telephone exchange here. He served as Postmaster of Early for a number of years. He also operated a drug store and billiard parlor, from which he retired in 1935. Following the death of his wife in 1940 and the subsequent marriage of his daughter, Jackie, Mr. Kelley has made his home with his son, Ralph, in Early. Relatives from out-of-town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Celesta Sullivan and son, Michael of Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hoskins and family of Sac City, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Sullivan of Bradgate, Don Kelley of Denver, Colo., Mrs. James Schauf and daughter of Omaha, Nebr., Mrs. E.E. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Wright, Clarence Wright, Mrs. Al Higgins and Mrs. Mary Lucey of Storm Lake, Mrs. John Giever, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Walsh and daughters of Omaha, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hurley and Mrs. James Ogden of Mason City, John and Frank Mulhall of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs John Kelley of Mankato, Minn., Mrs. Emmet Fitzgerald of Fonda, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wiewel of Pomeroy and Mr. Ronald Wiewel of Fort Dodge.
