Read More	The Villisca Review Villisca, Iowa Saturday, November 3, 1917 pg 1 PIONEER RESIDENT DEAD Joseph Moore Dies Thursday Evening at Home of Daughter, Mrs. Harry King, at Seventy-Five Joseph Moore, a resident of Villisca since 1855, died Thursday evening of this week at about 7:15 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry King on west Fourth street. The deceased had practically been an invalid for two years, old age complications being the cause of his infirmity. Joseph Moore was born near Rainsboro, Highland County, Ohio, March 8, 1842, and at the time of his death was seventy-five years, seven months and twenty-three days of age. He came with his parents to Iowa in a wagon in 1855 and came directly to Villisca. He made his home from that time until his death in this city. The deceased and his father, Thos. Moore, conducted the first store in Villisca. It was a general store, hauling all goods by wagon from St. Joe, Missouri, and Ottumwa, Iowa, and the early settlers in Villisca will well remember the place. Later Moore & Son engaged in the boot and shoe business for a number of years in a frame building which was located on the present site of the Stillians store. Following his career as a Villisca merchant Mr. Moore engaged in farming near this city. Joesph Moore was united in marriage to Martha Carlisle January 25, 1866. Mrs. Moore died September 19, 1900. The deceased is survived by four children: S.P. Moore and Mrs. Harry King of this city; Lee G. Moore of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Miss Linnie Moore, of Omaha, Nebraska. Seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Mr. Moore's three surviving sisters and three brothers are as follows: Mrs. Rachael Carlisle, Villisca; Mrs. Will Harris, Kline, Colorado; Mrs. J.S. Erkenbrack, Republic, Kansas; Phillip Moore and Jas. Moore of Ashton, Idaho; and John Moore of Republic, Kansas. The funeral service will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the Harry King hoe. Rev. Overturf will be in charge. Burial will be made beside the wife in the Villisca cemetery. - - - Joseph Moore was the son of Thomas Moore and Elizabeth Spargur, one of nine children. He married Martha Patty Carlisle on 25 Jan 1866 in Iowa. They had the following known children: Sterling, Legrand, Linnie, Sonia, Freddie, and Della.
