He passed away on April 19, 2007 at the Grand Island Veterans Home in Grand Island, Nebraska at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 12 days. Sykes Joseph Nelson Sykes, the son of Joe and Edith (Steele) Sykes, was born on March 7, 1923 on his parents farm near Ruskin, Nebraska. He passed away on April 19, 2007 at the Grand Island Veterans Home in Grand Island, Nebraska at the age of 84 years, 1 month and 12 days. Joe grew up as a young man on the farm and was educated in the Ruskin schools graduating in 1940 from Ruskin High School. After graduating Joe became a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Hebron, Nebraska. Joe was inducted into the United States Army on January 6, 1944 at Ft. Crooke, Nebraska; he was the Battalion Mail Clerk during WW II and was honorably discharged on November 19, 1945 in Osaka, Honshu, Japan receiving many honors including the Victory Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberations Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon. Returning from the service Joe worked as a truck driver and also did construction work. He met his sweetheart, Dorothy Troudt and on May 13, 1949 they were united in marriage in Guide Rock, Nebraska. This union was blessed with four children. In 1965 Joe started working for the Chicago and North Western Railroad as a clerk. His job started in Superior but ended up mostly in the Fremont area. He retired from the Railroad in 1985. Throughout his working career, Joe had lived in many communities due to his employment which included McPherson, Garfield and Phillipsburg all in Kansas and Hastings, Superior, Blair and the Fremont area in Nebraska. Superior was their retirement home until Dorothy passed away. Joe later moved to Hastings in 2000 and lived there for 6 years, due to his health he moved to the Grand Island Veterans Home on January 18, 2006 where he resided until his death. Joe placed his family as number one. He truly enjoyed his grand children and great grandchildren, they were his life and each was precious to him. He was a caring person and took very good care of Dorothy while she was ill, he was a stranger to no one. His garden and flower bed also reaped his gentle touch, especially his beautiful flowering Impatients. After moving to Hastings, Joe became involved in the Good Samaritan Center activities which include woodworking, golf, and the many numerous activities they had to offer. He took an active part in helping and attending his class reunions, until he was unable to do so. He always stayed in touch with his fellow classmates. Joe was a life member of the Superior VFW and Elks Club, he also was a member of the Transportation Communications International Union affiliated with the Railroad. Preceded in death by his parents; wife Dorothy on July 6, 1996, and son-in-law Daniel Benjamin; and brothers-in-law, Gifford Larsen and John Lowery. Joe will be deeply missed by his daughters, Lorna Jo Lipker and husband Norman of Shickley, Nebraska and Joyce Benjamin of Hastings, Nebraska, and sons, James Sykes and wife Vicker of Omaha, Nebraska and Jerry Sykes and wife Sharon of Ceresco, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, sisters, Myrna Larsen of Ruskin, Nebraska and Doris Lowery of Superior, Nebraska and one brother, James Sykes and wife Myrna of Naponee, Nebraska; nieces, nephews other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 23, 2007 at 10:30 AM from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Mark Diehl officiating. Recorded music selections of "Grandpa" (tell me about the good old days) by the Judds, "The Old Rugged Cross" by Anne Murray and "Tears In Heaven" by Eric Clapton were played and prelude selections was Christian musicmselections by Alan Jackson. Pallbearers were Les Brandt, Larry Sibert, Don Sykes, Phil Troudt, Bob Lowery, Russel Elliott, Jack Dutton, Dale Petersen and Larry Troudt. Honorary Pallbearers were his grandchildren, Travis Renken, Tammi Renken, Tonia Renken, Lora Hutchinson, Shawn Benjamin, James Sykes, Amanda Sykes, Ashley Sykes, Jerilyn Sykes, Clay Ehlers, Klifton Keefer and Whitney Keefer. Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska with Full Military Rites. Memorial suggested to the Good Samaritan Village in Hastings to go towards the wood shop or golf course. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska was in charge of the arrangements.
