Mr. Berry was born in Union on December 28, 1915, a son of the late Dr. Robert Reid Berry and Sarah Jane Palmer Berry. Read More	Mr. Joseph Nesbitt "Net" Berry, age 86 of 105 Douglass Heights, Union, widower of Flora Coker Berry, died Sunday, June 16, 2002. Mr. Berry was born in Union on December 28, 1915, a son of the late Dr. Robert Reid Berry and Sarah Jane Palmer Berry. He was named Elder Emeritus of the First Presbyterian Church where he taught the Young Couples Sunday School Class for over 30 years. The class was named J. N. Berry Sunday School Class in his honor. Mr. Berry was a graduate of Clemson University. While at Clemson, he was quarterback of the Clemson College Football team under Coach Frank Howard. In his senior year, Mr. Berry set a record for passes completed that stood for 48 years. For three years he was named to the All South Carolina Teams. His senior year, he was named Honorable Mention as an All- American by the Associated Press All American Team. He was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1981 and the Union High School Hall of Fame in 1998. After graduating from Clemson University he taught chemistry and biology and coached at Johnston and Sumter High Schools. He joined the Army on April 16, 1941 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. During WWII, he rose to the rank of Major and served as a battalion executive officer. After the war, he and his brothers, James and Pinckney, founded Berry Builder Mart. Later he and James started Union Home, a manufactured home business. In 1986, the business was relocated to its present site on the Old Buffalo Road and was re-named Paradise Home Center. In addition to his football talents, Mr. Berry was an avid golfer, being honored by the Union Country Club with the annual Net Berry Golf Classic. Mr. Berry served on the Union County Board of School Trustees for 28 years, serving ten years as Chairman. The vocational building at Union High School is named for him. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and past president of the Union Rotary Club, past president of the Union County Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Union Country Club Board, and served as president of the Carolina Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association. Mr. Berry is survived by two daughters: Kathleen Berry Read of Raeford, NC and Sarah Berry Gamble of Spartanburg; and two grandchildren: Flora Coker Gamble and Thomas Franklin Gamble. Mr. Berry is predeceased by four brothers: Robert R. James A, Walter P. and D. Pinckney Berry. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Tuesday, June 18 at 11:00am, conducted by the Rev. Van Edington. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Gene Logan, Oscar Johnson, Russell Caston, Norris Fowler, Whitney Smith and J. Vant Means. The family is at the home, 105 Douglass Heights, Union, SC 29379.
